
Wolverines Fall in Season Opener at No. 25 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell 12-10 to No. 25 Notre Dame on Friday night (Feb. 6) at Loftus Sports Center.
Freshman goalie Elizabeth Johnson earned her first career start in the cage and made 15 saves, while five Wolverines recorded multi-point games (0-1).
Senior Ceci Stein had a team-best three goals while Caroline Byrd paced Michigan with four points (one goal, three assists). Calli Norris had two goals and an assist and Ava Class added one goal and one assist in the first half.
Norris won a team-high five draw controls and Emma Arico picked up two ground balls and had one caused turnover.
Michigan got out to a fast start as it scored three straight goals, with a goal and an assist from Class in the first quarter. The Fighting Irish (1-0) lit up the scoreboard in the closing minutes of the quarter to bring them within two, 3-1, heading into the second 15 minutes of action.
Notre Dame answered back, outscoring Michigan 5-2 in the second quarter to take a 6-5 advantage into halftime.
Stein recorded two goals in the first half, Class had a goal and an assist, while Johnson made six saves and Norris had three draw-control wins.
Notre Dame tacked five more goals, while Michigan managed just two in the third quarter, with one each from Emma Bradbury and Norris, and U-M trailed 11-7 with 15 minutes to play in the contest.
The Wolverines scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to come within one, 11-10, but Notre Dame tacked on one final goal to secure the victory.
Michigan continues its road stint next Friday (Feb. 13) at noon, when it takes on Florida at Donald R. Dizney Stadium.
