
U-M Doubles Up Marquette in First Road Test

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team doubled up the University of Marquette with a 14-7 road victory Saturday (Feb. 7) at Valley Fields.
The Wolverines (2-0) outscored the Golden Eagles (0-1) in all four quarters with junior Nick Roode leading the offense, tying a career-best five goals, while junior CJ Reilly added two goals. The quartet of Alex Gatto, Kade Goldberg, Jack Jenkins and Bo Lockwood had two assists each, while Gatto and Goldberg also netted a goal for the Maize and Blue.
Freshman Tay Rodriguez won 10 faceoffs and also had six ground balls and one assist. Defensively, Jackie Weller had three ground balls and Max Bonner had one, while Hunter Taylor made 12 saves in the victory.
Michigan scored first with goals from Luke Shannehan and Roode to take a quick 2-0 advantage in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles began to exert offensive pressure and netted their first goal of the game, while Taylor made seven saves in the opening 15 minutes of action.
The second quarter had two ties as the two squads exchanged goals, but it was all Michigan in the closing six minutes as it notched three straight goals, with two from Roode and one from Augustine, to carry a 7-4 advantage into the halftime break.
Roode completed his hat trick in the first half, while Reilly netted two goals and Lockwood dished out two assists. Â
Michigan outscored Marquette for the third straight quarter as it recorded four straight goals from four different scorers, including Goldberg and Michael Kelly, who notched their first Michigan goals. The Wolverines went into the final 15 minutes of play with an 11-5 lead.
U-M finished off a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter with a pair of goals from Roode and one from Jack Marlow to lock up the decisive road victory over Marquette.
Michigan will return to Ann Arbor Tuesday (Feb. 10) when it takes on Detroit Mercy at 2 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The game is set to be streamed on B1G+.
