COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team used the third-best balance beam score in program history to cement its 197.375-197.075 victory over No. 19 Ohio State on Saturday (Feb. 7) at the Covelli Center.
The Wolverines scored a 49.600 on the beam, the third-highest score in program history and second-highest of the season, in the final rotation to ride to victory over the Buckeyes. Graduate student Carly Bauman and Kayli Boozer shared the beam title with matching 9.950s, while Quincy Walters finished third with a 9.925.
Michigan earned a share of all four individual event titles, with Sophia Diaz taking vault, Sophie Parenti earning the uneven bars title with a career-best 9.900. Boozer and Bauman won beam, and Bauman notched the floor title. The win on beam was Boozer's fifth straight and third 9.950 of the year, while Bauman grabbed a share of the beam and floor titles for the second straight week.
Michigan overcame adversity in the first rotation following a fall as it built on its scores through the final five routines, including freshman Myli Lew's career-tying 9.875 and Parenti scoring her first career 9.900 in the anchor spot. The Wolverines trailed Ohio State slightly, 49.300-49.225, after one complete rotation.
Peyton Davis set the tone for the second rotation as she stuck her vault for a career-best 9.875, and Boozer posted the second stick of the rotation with a 9.850. Diaz paced the Wolverines with a 9.900 as U-M swung the score back into its favor to take a 98.550-98.350 lead at the halfway point behind a second straight season-high 49.325 on the vault.
Walters earned a 9.875 in the second spot on floor exercise in the third rotation, while Bauman led Michigan with a 9.900 with the Wolverines carrying a 148.775-147.700 advantage into the final rotation.
The Wolverines cemented the win in the final rotation, with Boozer and Bauman scoring 9.950s and Walters posting a 9.925 en route to the third-highest beam score in program history.
Michigan continues its road stint as it travels to Los Angeles, Calif., to compete against No. 5 UCLA in a Big Ten Conference contest at 4 p.m. PT on B1G+.
