
Wolverines Outlast Broncos to Earn Victory in Home Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its home opener, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Western Michigan 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon (March 10) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (9-6) erased Western Michigan's brief lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Noah Miller to score Brayden Jefferis and Colby Turner to put the Wolverines ahead 2-1. Western Michigan tied the game at two in the top of the second with a two-out single.
The game remained deadlocked until the sixth, when Evan Haeger put the Wolverines in front with a bunt that scored Carson Luna from third to make the score 3-2.
The Broncos had chances to score throughout the game, stranding 13 runners, including three in the fourth and two in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the top of the ninth, WMU earned a leadoff walk, but a fielder's choice left the Broncos with a runner at first and one out. Gavin DeVooght induced a groundout that Drew Culbertson turned into a double play to end the game.
Five Wolverines tallied two hits in the contest: Jefferis, Turner, Miller, Matthew Ossenfort and Haeger, while Miller tallied two RBI.
Preston Barr pitched 1.2 innings to start the game, and Grant Bradley calmed the Broncos offense with 3.1 scoreless innings of relief. Slade Moore pitched 1.2 innings, earning his first career win. Max Debiec pitched a scoreless inning and DeVooght closed it out to earn his fifth save.
Michigan will open Big Ten play on Friday (March 13), when the Wolverines battle No. 1 UCLA in the start of a three-game set against the Bruins at Jackir Robinson Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PT, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
