LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 10-5 to No. 1-ranked UCLA on Friday night (March 13) at Jackie Robinson Stadium to begin conference play.
Trailing by eight heading into the ninth, Michigan (9-7, 0-1 Big Ten) attempted to come back and was aided by three straight walks to start off the inning. A Brayden Jefferis ground out scored Jonathan Kim from third. After another walk reloaded the bases, Colby Turner tallied his third hit of the day to plate Josh Campbell. Cade Ladehoff followed with another single, scoring Cooper Mullens, but a double play ended the rally and the game.
Michigan opened the game with a Jefferis single, and after a groundout, Colby Turner blasted a ball to left-center field for his fifth home run of the season, putting Michigan up 2-0.
The lead was short-lived, as UCLA (15-2, 4-0 Big Ten) answered in the bottom of the first, scoring four runs on five hits. The Wolverines held the Bruins scoreless until a six-run fourth broke the game open to pad their lead to 10-2.
The Wolverines put the leadoff man on base in four of the first five innings, including a single from Matthew Ossenfort in the second and a double from Noah Miller in the fourth, but could not capitalize. A Drew Culbertson leadoff single and a UCLA error put two Wolverines on with one out, but the Maize and Blue stranded the runners.
After UCLA's big inning, Keegan O'Hearn, Erik Puodziunas and Justin Brown combined for four scoreless innings of relief to hold UCLA to 10 runs.
Turner recorded three hits in the contest and added three RBI, while six other Wolverines tallied hits. Brown made his collegiate debut, striking out the first batter he faced as part of a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.
Michigan will look to even the series at 2 p.m. PT on Saturday (March 14), when it takes on UCLA at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
