LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- In a game that saw the Wolverines bring the go-ahead run to the plate in their last turn at bat, the University of Michigan baseball team came up on the short end of a 2-0 score at No. 1-ranked UCLAÂ on Saturday afternoon (March 14) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Entering the bottom of the ninth, Michigan (9-8, 0-2 Big Ten) started a two-out rally with Carson Luna being hit by a pitch and Brayden Jefferis drawing a walk after a long at-bat. The Bruins summoned their closer to take the mound with the go-ahead run coming to the plate, and he struck out Jonathan Kim to end the game.
UCLA (16-2, 5-0 Big Ten) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a two-out double after back-to-back singles opened the game. The Bruins threatened to add more throughout the contest, putting runners on in all but the fourth inning, but Kurt Barr and David Lally Jr. held them scoreless the rest of the game. Barr allowed the two runs on three hits and struck out six over five innings. Lally pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three.
The Wolverines had chances as well with runners on base in every inning but the third and eighth. U-M's best chances came in the sixth and the seventh, but they left the bases loaded in both frames.
In the sixth inning, Kim reached on an error and Colby Turner tallied his second hit of the game. Matthew Ossenfort then drew a two-out walk to load the bases, but a strikeout ended the frame.
In the seventh, a one-out single from Greg Pace Jr. and an error by the catcher put Drew Culbertson on. Pace was then called out on a lengthy-reviewed pickoff play. Jefferis singled, and Kim reached on an error to load the bases again with two outs, but a deep flyout to the warning track ended the inning.
Michigan will close out its series against UCLA at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday (March 15) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The series finale will be streamed live on B1G+.
