SALEM, Va. -- The University of Michigan softball team scored early and added insurance late to close out its spring break trip with a 7-1 win over Bryant in its Hokie Invitational finale on Friday morning (March 6) at the James Moyer Softball Complex. The Wolverines went 7-3 over the eight-day stretch across the Virginia Commonwealth.
Senior second baseman Indiana Langford went 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored and beat an leadoff infield single to key a four-run first inning for the Wolverines. She scored on junior centerfielder Jenissa Conway's subsequent single to center, while Conway scored four batters later on a double steal with two outs. Junior leftfielder Ella Stephenson, who was at the plate when Conway came home, launched a two-run homer to centerfield for her sixth long ball of the season.
Bryant spoiled the shutout bid with a leadoff solo homer in the fifth inning, but Michigan got it back in the home half of the inning and tacked on two more in the sixth to pull away further. Stephenson recorded her third RBI of the game with a sac fly to left center in the former frame, while sophomore rightfielder Lauren Putz and junior pinch hitter Reganne Bennett posted back-to-back RBI singles in the latter. It was Bennett's second pinch-hit RBI hit in three games.
Freshman RHP Grayson LaMarche (2-1) earned her second win from the circle, fanning five Bulldog batters while allowing three hits and one walk through four scoreless innings. Bryant put its first two batters on base with a walk and single in the first, but LaMarche answered with three straight swinging strikeouts to strand both. Sophomore RHP Haley Ferguson added two more strikeouts in the final two frames and allowed one run on two hits and a walk.
The Wolverines (19-6) will open Big Ten Conference play on the road next weekend, traveling to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game set against Nebraska. The teams will face off at 5:30 p.m. CT on Friday (March 13), 1 p.m. CT on Saturday (March 14) and 11:30 a.m. CT on Sunday (March 15) at the Huskers' Bowlin Stadium.
