ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won its 11th consecutive Big Ten match, shutting out Rutgers, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon (April 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan won the doubles point for the second straight match, getting wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to take the early 1-0 lead. At the top spot, Laura Rahnel and Reese Miller were broken in the first game before winning the next six to get off court with a 6-1 victory.
U-M's No. 3 pair of Jessica Bernales and Bayley Sheinin went up a break at 5-3 and had a chance to serve out the match. Rutgers responded with a break, winning when U-M double faulted on the deuce point. Michigan cashed in on its second match point in the next game when a Bernales return forced a Rutgers shot long in a 6-4 victory.
Michigan took five first sets in singles, highlighted by Sheinin winning six straight games to erase a 5-1 deficit in a 7-5 first-set win.
Bernales broke for a 6-5 lead in the first set, closing it out in the next game on her serve when she won the final three points to rally from a 15-40 hole. She did not drop a game in the next set, winning 6-0 to put U-M's second point on the board.
Moments later, Rahnel accounted for Michigan's third point of the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5. Much like Bernales, she broke for a 5-4 lead in the first set and closed it out on her serve in the ensuing game. She went up a break early in the second set and never gave it back, surrendering just one game in the straight-set win.
Emily Sartz-Lunde clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3. She won three of the first four games in the first set en route to the win. In the second, she ripped off five straight games after falling behind at 3-1 to clinch Michigan's 11th Big Ten win of the season.
U-M completes a doubleheader of action later this afternoon (April 12), hosting Oakland at 4 p.m.
