ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman southpaw Shane Brinham allowed Oregon just three hits, while the University of Michigan baseball team turned eight into double-digit runs in a 10-0, seven-inning win over the Ducks on Thursday afternoon (April 2) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Brinham (2-3) struck out seven without issuing a walk and retired 16 in a row between the first and sixth innings, surrendering singles in the first, sixth and seventh innings. The Ducks (23-7, 7-3 Big Ten) did not advance a runner beyond first base.
The Wolverine bats gave Brinham early support, with Noah Miller putting Michigan (15-13, 4-6 Big Ten) in front with a solo home run to open the second inning.
Michigan broke the game open in the third, scoring five runs on only two hits. With one out, a hit by pitch followed by back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A groundout pushed Drew Culbertson home from third, and the next batter, Miller, singled to shallow center field to bring home Cooper Mullens and Colby Turner. Evan Haeger drew a walk, and he and Miller advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a Brayden Jefferis single to center, and the Wolverines took a 6-0 lead.
U-M added a run in the fourth inning. Greg Pace Jr. doubled to open the frame, moved to third on a bunt single and scored on a double play.
Michigan reached run-rule territory with a three-run sixth inning, with doubles from Mullens and Turner plating one and two runs, respectively, to put U-M up 10-0. Brinham tossed a 12-pitch seventh inning to secure the win for himself and the Wolverines.
Miller recorded a two-hit, three-RBI day, while Mullens and Pace scored twice. Jefferis and Turner recorded two RBIs.
The Wolverines will return to action against Oregon on Friday (April 3) at Ray Fisher Stadium, looking to capture a series win. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., and the contest will be streamed live on B1G+.
