Mandi Unruh returned to the University of Michigan women’s golf program as an assistant coach in 2024 and is now in her third season back in Ann Arbor. After stepping away from collegiate coaching for three years to start her family, Unruh rejoined head coach Jan Dowling’s staff following a highly successful five-year stint with the Wolverines from 2017-21.
Across seven seasons at Michigan, Unruh has helped guide the Wolverines into consistent Big Ten and national contention, contributing to five NCAA postseason appearances and several of the program's top team and individual performances.
Her impact was immediate during her first season in Ann Arbor, as Michigan posted a top-five finish at the Big Ten Championships before advancing to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year.
At nationals, the Wolverines recorded what was then the program's best finish (t-16th), highlighted by Elodie Van Dievoet becoming Michigan’s first All-American after tying for fourth individually.
Following the COVID-shortened 2020 seasons, Unruh helped guide Michigan through one of the strongest stretches in program history during the spring of 2021. The Wolverines recorded five straight top-five finishes, including a runner-up showing at the Big Ten Championships and another trip to the NCAA Finals. Michigan set a program record at the conference championships while placing all five golfers inside the top 25 and producing three All-Big Ten honorees, led by Freshman of the Year Monet Chun.
The postseason momentum continued at the NCAA Columbus Regional, where Chun finished runner-up to help Michigan advance to nationals. At the NCAA Championships, Hailey Borja became the first Wolverine to reach the final round of stroke play, finishing fifth overall while posting a program NCAA-record 72-hole score.
Since rejoining the program, Unruh has continued to mentor individual postseason success, helping Mara Janess (2025) and Lauren Sung (2026) earn NCAA Regional individual selections.
Before Michigan, Unruh spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Tulane University, helping lead the Green Wave to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances and an NCAA Championships berth in 2015. Tulane recorded nine top-five team finishes during her tenure, highlighted by the 2014 Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational title. She also coached Emily Penttila to Golfweek Honorable Mention All-America honors and Louisiana Women’s Golfer of the Year recognition.
Unruh began her collegiate coaching career at Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis during the 2013-14 season, helping guide the Jaguars to five top-10 team finishes, including a third-place showing at the Summit League Championship.
A native of Kent, Unruh was a standout player at Kent State University from 2008-12, where she played for her father and longtime head coach Mike Morrow. She helped the Golden Flashes capture four straight Mid-American Conference titles while earning second-team All-MAC honors in both 2011 and 2012.
Her collegiate highlights included a third-place finish at the 2011 Lady Buckeye Invitational and a tie for 14th at the NCAA Central Regional, narrowly missing an NCAA Championships berth by one stroke.
An accomplished amateur player, Unruh twice reached the Sweet 16 at the Women’s Western Amateur and competed in three U.S. Women’s Public Links Championships as well as the 2009 U.S. Women’s Amateur.
Away from the course, Unruh was active in Kent State’s Athletic Leadership Academy, served as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative and worked in athletics marketing and advancement. She earned her bachelor’s degree in sports administration in 2012.
Unruh and her husband, Ryan, reside in Novi with their daughter, Harper, and dog, Reese.
