Biff Poggi
- Title:
- Interim Head Coach
Francis "Biff" Poggi is in his fourth full season with the Maize and Blue in 2025 and is serving as the program's interim head coach for the 2025 Cheez-It Citrus Bowl.
Â
Poggi joined U-M for the 2016 season in an analyst role and spent the 2021 and 2022 seasons as associate head coach under head coach Jim Harbaugh. He left for a two-year stint as head coach at Charlotte (2023-24) and returned to Ann Arbor to serve as associate head coach under Sherrone Moore in spring 2025. Poggi led the Wolverines in an interim capacity for two games (2-0) during the 2025 season: a 63-3 win over Central Michigan and a 30-27 road victory at Nebraska.
Â
Poggi was Charlotte's third head football coach and led the 49ers for 22 games through the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He was named head coach on Nov. 15, 2022 and served in that capacity until Nov. 18, 2024.
Â
Poggi spent 19 seasons at The Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was an assistant for eight seasons before being named head coach for his final 11 years. A program alumnus himself, Poggi helped guide the team to 13 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference titles. The Gilman School finished No. 13 in the final USA Today High School Sports Super 25 football rankings in 2015, his final year as head coach. Poggi finished his career at Gilman with a 135-43 record in his 11 seasons leading the program.
Â
After spending the 2016 season in Ann Arbor as an analyst, he founded the football program at Saint Frances Academy, a private high school in Baltimore. Saint Frances rose to national prominence under Poggi (2017-2020), and he supported the program directly with financial resources, including the funding of 65 scholarships. Poggi found success as a hedge fund manager earlier in his life.
Â
He played a key role in Michigan's back-to-back Big Ten Title-winning seasons in 2021 and 2022, which both produced trips to the College Football Playoff National Semifinals.
Â
Poggi has additional collegiate coaching experience as an assistant at Brown University, at The Citadel and (for one spring season) at Temple University. He was a 1979 graduate of the Gilman School. Poggi played collegiately at Pittsburgh and graduated from Duke in 1984.
Â
Poggi and his wife, Amy, have five children: Sam, Jim, Henry, Mellie and Mary. Henry played fullback at U-M (2014-17) and appeared in 44 games.
