Sean Maymi (pronounced MY-me) was named head coach of the University of Michigan men's tennis program in July 2023.
In his first season, he guided the Wolverines to an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after finishing as the runners-up in the Big Ten. During the fall, Maymi and the Wolverines qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championship after winning the ITA Kick-Off. The squad opened B1G play in the spring on a seven-match win streak and kept a 20+ year win streak over Michigan State in tact to finish second in the league standings. It was another win over the Spartans that led the Wolverines to its third straight B1G Tournament Championship. Michigan reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament and qualified first-team All-B1G selection Gavin Young to the NCAA Singles Championship. Both he and Jacob Bickersteth also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championship.

Maymi made his return to Ann Arbor after spending five seasons as the head coach of the men’s tennis team at the University of Nebraska (2018-23). Maymi steadily built the Huskers program since his arrival in 2018, with the team having its best two seasons in 2022 and 2023. They finished fifth both seasons in the Big Ten with a record number of conference wins with five This past season, the team finished No. 30 in the ITA national rankings, the third highest in program history.

A familiar face to Ann Arbor, Maymi served two successful stints as associate head coach of the Wolverines from 2006-11 and again from 2015-18. As an assistant, he helped to guide the Wolverines to eight NCAA Tournament appearances in his nine seasons, reaching the round of 16 twice.

During his first stint, under then-head coach Bruce Berque, Maymi and the Wolverines made five straight NCAA appearances and climbed to No. 8 in the ITA rankings in both 2008 and 2011. He was named the ITA Midwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2008. It was under his leadership that Brian Hung and Matko Maravic earned All-America status in doubles in 2007, with Evan King capturing three All-America singles honors (2011, 2012, 2013) and earning Big Ten Athlete of the Year twice.

With Michigan under new leadership with then-head coach Adam Steinberg, Maymi returned in the fall of 2015. He helped Michigan to three consecutive 20-win seasons and three straight top-25 final ITA rankings. Additionally, he worked as the primary coach for King on the pro circuit as he climbed to No. 185 in the ATP singles rankings and No. 118 in doubles.

Between stints at Michigan, Maymi worked as the general manager of the global division and director of business development for Todd Martin Tennis in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Additionally, he spent six months training players at the Junior Tennis Champions Center - a world-class training center for young players in College Park, Maryland.

A 2003 graduate of North Florida, Maymi was a four-year letterwinner and two-time captain for the Ospreys. North Florida made two appearances in the NCAA Division II National Championship in both 1999 and 2001. He stayed on as assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs during the 2001-02 season while earning his degree in communications/advertising.

After a year spent as coach and hitting partner of ATP professional Michael Russell, as well as serving as a member of the Player Services team at the ATP International Headquarters, Maymi returned to the collegiate coaching ranks.

In 2004, he served as assistant coach of both the men’s and women’s teams at Division III Claremont Mudd Scripps (Claremont, Calif.). He was also a teaching professional for top-ranked junior players at the Racquet Club of Lake Bluffs in Illinois, while also serving as volunteer coach for Northwestern men’s team for the 2004-05 season. In 2005-06 he was hired as the assistant coach at Fresno State. He took the Bulldogs to the Western Athletic Conference title match while coaching four all-conference players including the WAC Plyer of the Year.

A native of Yorktown, Virginia, Sean and his wife, Samantha, have three daughters and two sons.
