Late Surge Propels U-M to Victory Over No. 7 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The 10th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two goals in the final five minutes to defeat the seventh-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes 3-2 Friday (Oct. 1) at the OSU Turf Field.
The Buckeyes (8-2, 1-2 Big Ten) drew first blood in the game, opening the scoring with 11:47 remaining in the first half. The Wolverines (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) tied the game 1:56 later with when freshman Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) scored her first career goal, off a redirection of a shot by Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS). Ohio State retook the lead with 3:23 remaining in the first half, but was shut down the rest of the way.
The second half was dominated by the Maize and Blue as it outshot OSU 10-1. U-M had numerous chances to score but was unable to find the back of the goal until freshman sensation Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) fired a shot past Ohio State goaltender Gillian Batey to tie the game with 4:46 remaining. Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) prevented the game from going into overtime as she scored the game winner, her sixth goal of the season, with 3:50 remaining.
The Wolverines, winners of five straight, will return to action Sunday (Oct. 3, noon), when they travel to State College, Pa., to face annual nemesis and fifth-ranked Penn State.
