SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Senior designated hitter Mike Seestedt (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Sacred Heart HS) keyed a five-run third inning with a grand slam home run to lead the University of Michigan baseball team to an 8-5 win over the University of San Diego on Saturday (Feb. 27) at Cunningham Stadium.
The Wolverines (2-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before getting five runs in the third for the second straight day. Seestedt's left-field blast came with two outs and gave Michigan starter Luke Bonner (Taylor, Mich./Divine Child HS) a comfortable five-run lead.
Michigan added to its lead in the fourth as team captain Mike Cervenak (New Boston, Mich./Divine Child HS) doubled and scored on a two-out single by sophomore catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS), knocking Toreros starter Mike Amundson from the game.
The Wolverines got their final run in the seventh, going up 8-3 as senior second baseman Bobby Scales' (Roswell, Ga./Milton HS) two-out double drove in senior Jason Alcaraz (Albuquerque, N.M./Eldorado HS), who had singled to lead off the inning.
Freshman Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) relieved Bonner to start the seventh but ran into some trouble, giving up two hits, two walks and two runs in a third of an inning. With the bases loaded and one out, freshman Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) entered the game and sandwiched two strikeouts around a walk to end the inning with U-M leading 8-5.
In the bottom of the ninth, San Diego (7-6) loaded the bases with two outs, but Korecky fanned pinch hitter Juan Garcia to earn his first career save. Korecky pitched two and two-thirds innings in his U-M debut and gave up two hits while striking out four and walking two.
Bonner (1-0) picked up the win for the Wolverines, while Amundson (2-2) was tagged with the loss.
The two teams will conclude a three-game series on Sunday (Feb. 28) with a 1 p.m. PST contest at Cunningham Stadium.
NOTES
• Mike Cervenak's two doubles raised his career total to 47 and moved him into a fourth-place tie with Jim Paciorek on Michigan's career list. He also has 211 career hits, good for fifth place all-time.
• Jason Alcaraz followed a 4-for-5 performance on Friday with a pair of safeties in five at bats Saturday. The six hits give him 197 for his career, putting him three away from becoming just the eighth Wolverine ever to reach 200 career hits.
• Six of Michigan's eight runs were scored with two outs.
