WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Freshman April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) scored her second goal of the game at 4:22 of the second overtime to help the fifth-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 14 William & Mary on Saturday (Nov. 11) in the NCAA Tournament first round at Kentner Stadium. Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made a career-high 19 saves for the Wolverines.
The Maize and Blue began the game with a quick 1-0 lead six minutes into the contest with a goal by Fronzoni. From that point on the Tribe put the pressure on Michigan until William & Mary's Jess Jiao finally tied the score at 21:21 of the second half. Jiao then put the Tribe up 2-1 with nine minutes remaining in regulation.
After a William & Mary injury timeout, Michigan reacted at 4:22 when Jessie Veith (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) put the ball in at a scrum in front of the net to take the game into overtime. William & Mary had several scoring chances in the first and second overtime periods but was stonewalled by Tasch.
With four minutes remaining in the second overtime, Fronzoni saw her opportunity when Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS) fed her at the net for the game-winning goal.
The Wolverines will play No. 4 Wake Forest, the regional host, tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 12) at 2 p.m. for an NCAA national semifinal berth. The game will be a rematch of last season's regional final, in which U-M defeated the Demon Deacons 3-2 in double overtime. Earlier this season (Oct. 14), Wake Forest shut out Michigan 2-0 in Winston-Salem.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the game ... "It was a great hockey match. I have to give a lot of credit to William & Mary. They were outstanding. They had great one-on-one defense and attacked every time they had a chance, but I told our team we just have to stick to what we have been doing all year, and in the end it paid off."
On Jessie Veith's game-tying goal ... "I'm real happy for Veith having scored that goal, she's been battling a back injury all season and we haven't been able to play her as much as we would like. She's been such a huge player for us in the past and she showed that today."
On the play of William & Mary ... "We played well, but the way they played made us look bad because of the incredible effort that was on the field, and we expected that coming into the NCAA Tournament."
U-M Freshman Forward April Fronzoni
On how the team regrouped after an injury timeout with five minutes remaining in regulation ... "During the timeout we were still confident and we told each other we have to give everything we have and play our hearts out and play together to win the game."
U-M Junior Defender Catherine Foreman
On her defensive effort ... "William & Mary did a great job of putting pressure on us. I had to get back and make some hard tackles, but we didn't fold and stuck together as a unit and got the victory."
U-M Junior Goalkeeper Maureen Tasch
On making a career-high 19 saves ... "The game seemed a little longer then usual, having faced that many shots, but a lot of them weren't direct. Our defense played great at the net keeping our opponent from having easy chances."
