Thirteen-Run Inning Highlights Wolverine Win Over Kent

The 13-run fifth inning helped, too!
The Wolverines (6-6) have won four straight and have collected double figures in hits six times in the last seven games. The 19 hits Sunday vs. Kent were the most for the Wolverines since collecting 19 while winning the Big Ten Tournament championship game vs. Minnesota last May in Columbus, Ohio.
The Kent Golden Flashes (7-3) scored four times in the first two innings and took a 9-0 lead into the fifth inning after knocking out U-M starter Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) in the second inning. Kent catcher Alex Marconi paced the early attack with a single, a double and a homer in the first four innings. Kent had four homers in the game.
Kent starter Dustin Sampson was breezing along and retired the first two batters in the fifth. He needed just one more out to qualify for his second win of the season, but he never got that out.
Michigan freshman LF Jordan Cantalamessa (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), went 3-for-4 in the game, snapped an 0-for-15 skid with his first career homer and cut the lead to 9-1. The Wolverines sent 17 batters to the plate in the fifth and when the smoke cleared 13 runs had been scored on 10 hits and two errors. Only the Cantalamessa homer was charged as an earned run against the Kent pitching staff in the inning.
Koman, who has reached base eight straight times (7-for-7 and a walk), and junior C David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) each went 2-for-2 in the fifth inning. Senior/junior SS Bill LaRosa (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) delivered the game-winning hit with his two-run double that gave Michigan a 10-9 lead.
Koman jumped his batting average to .438 and Parrish (.318) had three hits in the game and drove in two runs. Junior 2B Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) also had three hits vs. Kent.
Freshman LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS) replaced Korecky on the mound in the second inning and fanned six in 4.2 innings to record his first career win. Sophomore RHP Phil Lobert (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven HS) worked the final three innings to record his first save.
Michigan returns to Florida next weekend (March 17-19) for a weekend series against defending NCAA champion Miami. Junior RHP Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS), 1-1 with a 2.30 ERA, is expected to pitch the opener against the Hurricanes on Friday (March 17) at 7 p.m.
N O T E S
Tri-captain Kevin Quinn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) has a career-best five-game hitting streak, while tri-captain Rob Bobeda (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) and SS Bill LaRosa have four-game streaks.
Brock Koman collected his sixth multiple-hit game -- and second four-hit game -- of the season on Sunday (March 12) vs. Kent. Koman leads the Wolverines in hits (21), doubles (8), slugging percentage (.604), on-base percentage (.481) and batting average (.438). He shares the RBI lead (11) with catcher David Parrish.
Among regulars with at least 23 at bats, Brock Koman (21-for-48) leads the Wolverines in hitting with a .438 batting average. He is followed by David Parrish (.318, 14-for-44), Scott Tousa (.316, 12-for-38), Jordan Cantalamessa (.282, 11-for-39) and Kevin Quinn (.261, 6-for-23).
