Miami (18-7) snapped Michigan's (6-7) four-game winning streak, scoring three times in the second inning and adding four more in the fourth to chase Michigan starter and loser Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS), whose record fell to 1-2. Hurricane senior RHP David Gil (4-0) collected the 18th straight win of his Miami career as he worked the first five innings, allowing a run on three hits.
Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as junior catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) walked to lead off the inning and scored from first on a double to right-center by tri-captain Rob Bobeda (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS).
Miami tied the game on a two-out homer by Kevin Mannix, and a two-out single by catcher Mike DiRosa later in the second inning proved to be the game-winning hit. Miami DH Kevin Howard knocked in three runs and 3B Lale Esquivel added his team-leading eighth homer of the year to pace the Miami attack.
Trailing 12-1, the Wolverines batted around in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on four hits with redshirt freshman OF Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS) collecting his second pinch single of the season.
Bobeda, freshman 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) and freshman RF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) each added ninth-inning singles, the second hit of the game for all three.
Sophomore RHP Bobby Wood (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) made his second appearance of the season and fanned six in 3.1 innings.
Michigan plays Miami again Saturday night (March 18, 7 p.m.), with either senior LHP Bryan Cranson (Bronson, Mich./Bronson HS) or freshman RHP Tim Leveque (Northridge, Calif./Crespi HS) on the mound. Cranson is 2-1 (5.15 ERA) while Leveque is 0-0 (0.00 ERA).
