ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Minnesota senior LHP Kelly Werner fired a three-hit, complete-game 7-0 shutout Sunday (March 26) to give the Golden Gophers a weekend sweep of Michigan in Big Ten Conference baseball action at Ray Fisher Stadium. Minnesota (11-11, 4-0 Big Ten) had three complete games and a pair of shutouts in the Big Ten-opening weekend for both teams.

Werner (2-3) allowed just two Wolverines to reach second base in the contest. Both reached second after two outs as senior CF Rob Bobeda (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) walked and reached second on a stolen base in the second inning and senior RF Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) hit a two-out double in the fourth inning. Michigan junior catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) legged out an infield single in the ninth inning for the only Wolverine hit in the last five innings.

Minnesota scored the only run it need in the second inning as sophomore 1B Josh Holthaus singled to center off Michigan starter and loser sophomore RHP Bobby Wood (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS). Holthaus advanced to second as Jack Hannahan reached on an error and scored on an infield grounder by 2B Scott Welch.

The Gophers scored three runs on one hit in the fourth inning, scoring runs on a pair of bases loaded walks and a sac fly by catcher Jeremy Negen. Minnesota DH Luke Appert knocked in runs in the sixth on a single and in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

The highlight for the Wolverines came from the bullpen as sophomore LHP Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) worked 4.2 innings allowing one earned run and sophomore RHP Phil Lobert (Spring Lake, Mich./Grand Haven HS) retired all four batters he faced.

Michigan (6-12-1, 0-4 Big Ten) faces Western Michigan in a non-conference game Tuesday (March 28, 3 p.m.) at Ray Fisher Stadium, with sophomore LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) as a probable starter on the mound. Taylor is 0-0 and has made two appearances this season.

Parrish is the leader in Big Ten play with a .333 average (5-for-15).
