St. John's Overpowers Wolverines, 12-3

McGerry (1-0) earned his first win of the season with a six-inning outing. He fanned eight and walked two while allowing nine hits and two runs. The Red Storm (2-2) exploded for four runs after two outs in the fourth inning to knock out Michigan starter LHP Bryan Cranson (Bronson, Mich./Bronson HS).
St. John's used back-to-back homers from DH Chad Cambra (3-run homer) and CF Pete Graham to move the lead from 3-0 to 7-0 in a matter of four pitches. Freshman 1B John Kahn closed out the St. John's scoring with a pinch homer in his first career at bat in the ninth inning. Senior second baseman Matt Galante paced the St. John's offense with a 3-for-3 game that included a pair of doubles, two walks and two RBI.
Cranson (1-1) finished the fourth inning and was then followed to the mound by freshman RHP Brad McCloskey (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) in the fifth. Sophomore LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) pitched in the eighth and sophomore RHP Nick Bellows (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge HS) closed the game in the ninth.
Michigan freshman centerfielder Blake Rutkowski (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) collected the first hit off McGerry with a bunt single in the third inning.
The Wolverines had threats in the middle innings scoring twice in the fifth inning, but leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth.
Michigan's fifth-inning rally featured a leadoff double by junior second baseman Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) and a single by Rutkowski to set the table. Tri-captain Kevin Quinn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) knocked in the first run with a double and freshman third baseman Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) added a run-scoring single.
Four Wolverines had two hits in the game, including freshman first baseman Jordan French (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS) who notched his first career hit in the sixth inning. Koman, Rutkowski and Tousa also had two hits in the game for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines close out the nine-game spring break road trip vs. Duquesne on Sunday (March 5, 1 p.m.) with either Bobby Korecky (0-1, 4.26 ERA) or Bobby Wood (0-1, 5.14 ERA), both sophomore right-handers on the mound.

Freshman Brock Koman was 2-for-3 vs. St. John's, his third multiple-hit game of the season. Koman leads the team in hitting (.375), hits (12) and RBI (7).
Among regulars with at least 18 at bats, Brock Koman (12-for-32) leads the Wolverines in hitting with a .375 batting average. He is followed by David Parrish (.333, 9-for-27), Jordan Cantalamessa (.308, 8-for-26), Kevin Quinn (.278, 5-for-18) and Blake Rutkowski (.240, 6-for-25).
Tri-captain Kevin Quinn and Brock Koman have four-game hitting streaks, while David Parrish and Blake Rutkowski have three-game streaks.
Freshman first baseman Jordan French and redshirt freshman outfielder Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle HS) became the sixth and seventh Wolverines to notch first career hits. French went 2-for-5 and Sokol collected a pinch single in the game vs. St. John's.
