Indiana Pitching Leads to Hoosier Sweep Over Michigan

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana used a pair of complete-game pitching performances to sweep Michigan 6-1 and 10-3 in Big Ten Conference baseball doubleheader action Saturday (April 1) at Sembower Field. Indiana RHP Zach McClellan (3-3) collected the win in the opener despite allowing 11 hits and LHP David Ferris (5-0) won the second game for the Hoosiers. The Wolverines (8-15-1, 1-6 Big Ten) had runners in each inning in the opener but left 10 on base.
With U-M trailing 1-0 in the second inning of the opener, senior CF Rob Bobeda (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) singled and later scored the tying run on a base hit by senior RF Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS). However, Michigan left two men on base in each inning from the second to the sixth as Indiana scored twice in the third inning and three in the fifth.
Hoosier CF Tim McNab tripled to lead off the third inning against Michigan starter and loser Tim Leveque (Northridge, Calif./Crespi HS) and he scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by 3B Dan Haegele. RF Blake St. Clair had a first inning homer for IU.
Wolverine tri-captain Kevin Quinn (Midland, Mich./Midland HS), who has five hits in the series, opened the second game with a walk and scored as freshman 1B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) lined his first career triple to center for a 1-0 lead.
Senior LHP Bryan Cranson (Bronson, Mich./Bronson HS) gave up three to the Hoosiers in the bottom of the first and IU chased him with a five-run fourth inning. Cranson (2-3) suffered the loss allowing six hits and seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings of work.
Indiana held a 10-1 lead when the Wolverines closed out the scoring with a pair of runs in the seventh inning as freshman CF Blake Rutkowski (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) walked, moved to third on Quinn's double. Junior SS Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highland HS) singled in the first run and Koman knocked in Quinn with a sac fly.
Indiana DH Joe Sadler was 3-for-4 in the second game with a single, double and a triple.
Michigan faces Indiana in the fourth game of the series on Sunday (April 2, 1 p.m. CDT) with junior RHP Vince Pistilli (Highland, Ind./Highland HS) on the mound. Pistilli is 1-3 with a 5.04 ERA.

David Parrish's (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) infield single in the seventh inning of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader extended his hit streak to eight games.
Senior RF Jay Dines (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia HS) was 3-for-3 in the first game and had four hits total in Saturday's twinbill at Indiana. It was the second career three-hit game for Dines as a Wolverine.
Freshman 1B Brock Koman was 2-for-5 in the doubleheader with a double, a triple, a sacrifice bunt, a sac fly and a walk. Koman, one of two players to start every game, leads the Wolverines in batting average (.345), hits (30), doubles (11) hit by pitches (4) and on-base percentage (.410).
Michigan's leading hitters (minimum 30 at bats) after Saturday's doubleheader include: freshman 3B Brock Koman (.345, 30-for-87), senior OF Rob Bobeda (.307, 27-for-88), senior IF Kevin Quinn (.300, 15-for-50), junior C David Parrish (.287, 23-for-80) and senior OF Jay Dines (.270, 17-for-63).
