U-M Suffers Series Sweep as Lions Take Over First

Penn State (35-9, 15-4 Big Ten) scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to ice the win that pushed the Nittany Lions into first place in the conference standings. Michigan dropped to 15-12-1 (6-14 Big Ten) with the loss).
The Wolverines held an early 3-0 lead as freshman 2B Jordan Cantalamessa (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) sparked the second-inning rally with a two-run homer, his third of the season.
Penn State chased Michigan starter Bobby Wood (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) with seven runs in the first four innings.
The Wolverines rallied to tie the game with three runs in the fifth and a run in the top of the sixth knocked in on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher David Parrish (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS).
However, Fagan homered off losing pitcher freshman LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Penn State then sent 15 batters to the plate while scoring the 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Freshman 1B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) paced the Wolverines in the loss, going 3-for-5.
Michigan opens a busy week of action Tuesday (May 2, 3 p.m.), hosting Oakland University in a single game at Ray Fisher Stadium with either sophomore LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, North Farmington HS) or freshman RHP Brad McCloskey (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice HS) on the mound. Taylor is 1-0 (3.65 ERA) and McCloskey is 0-1 (7.15 ERA).

Michigan started four freshmen in Sunday's game at Penn State with Brock Koman at 1B, Jordan Cantalamessa at 2B, Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) in RF and Blake Rutkowski (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) in CF. The four combined for four hits in Michigan's three-run second inning, with Cantalamessa hitting a homer and the other three collecting singles.
Senior tri-captain Rob Bobeda (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS), playing is his 141st career game Sunday at Penn State, recorded his 125th and 126th career hits in the loss.
