ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team lost 2-0 to the University of Illinois-Chicago Thursday night (Sept. 14) on a cold and damp night at Elbel Field. Flames goalkeepers Chris Jamal and Scott Greene split time to shut out the Wolverines.
Heavy rain came down upon play in the first half to slow the momentum down for both teams. The game was scoreless at halftime with little offense and few scoring opportunities on both sides.
Michigan (2-2), which had 21 fouls for the game, picked an unfortunate time to foul UIC (3-1-1) in the second half and gave the Flames a penalty kick situation. Eric Lukin took advantage of the Wolverines' mistake and put UIC on the board at the 65:07 mark.
Lukin would later add an assist when Dennis King rolled a slow roller past diving senior goal keeper Albert Geldres (St. Clair, Mich./Detroit Country Day Prep) to put the Flames up 2-0 72:32 into the match.
Michigan had few scoring opportunities throughout the game. With only four shots on goal, the Wolverines were unable to put much pressure on the Flames' defense.
The Wolverines return to action Sunday (Sept. 17) when they square off against in-state rival Detroit at 2 p.m. on Elbel Field.
