ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team fell 85-52 to the University of Wisconsin on Thursday (Jan. 4) in front of 1,374 people at Crisler Arena as the Wolverines shot just 33 percent from the field and lost their second consecutive Big Ten Conference game.
Senior guard Anne Thorius (Horsholm, Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) got the Wolverines on the board with a three-point basket before Wisconsin (9-4, 2-1 Big Ten) took the lead off of several missed Michigan shots. The Wolverines (8-5, 1-2 Big Ten) kept the score close, but were never able to catch up enough to take the lead. Several more missed shots and team turnovers enabled the Badgers to take a 14-point lead with 1:11 left in the first half.
Leading the scoring path for the Wolverines in the first half was junior guard Alayne Ingram (Lansing, Mich./Waverly HS), who finished the period with 13 points. Sinking her final three points of the half as time ran out, Ingram took Michigan to the locker room down by 10, 48-38.
Steals, blocks and turnovers proved to be the keys of the first half for both teams. The Wolverines combined for a total of eight first half steals, including three from Ingram and two each from junior forward Raina Goodlow (Detroit, Mich./Dominican HS) and freshman forward Stephanie Gandy (Detroit, Mich./Northern HS). The Badgers worked together to account for four blocked shots. Sixteen of Michigan's first-half points and 10 of Wisconsin's came off turnovers.
The second half provided more of the same. Michigan's offense was unable to find the basket, scoring only six points in the first 10 minutes of the final period. Wisconsin, meanwhile, kept scoring and drawing out its lead. With 6:42 remaining, Goodlow fouled out for the second time this season. Head coach Sue Guevara cleared her bench, allowing every member of the squad to participate.
Michigan shot 6-of-29 in the second half and finished the game with only two points in the final 8:14. Ingram led the team in scoring with 15, with Goodlow finishing second with 14. Sophomore center LeeAnn Bies (Lakeview, Mich./Lakeview HS) rounded out the double-digit scoring Wolverines with a total of 12.
The Wolverines will travel to Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday (Jan. 7) to take on the University of Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Sue Guevara
On the game overall ... "We were overwhelmed inside and they also knocked down shots from the perimeter. Once it started snowballing, it turned into an avalanche."
On the play of Alayne Ingram ... "She shot the ball much better tonight, but what I liked the most was she played better defense and she also did a good job of finding open people."
On how to bounce back from the loss ... "We will watch the tape tomorrow and then burn it. We will go back to work because we still have a lot of games left."
