LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday (March 18) to top Michigan 6-5 in college baseball action at Hoglund Ballpark. The rally by the host Jayhawks (12-10) countered Michigan's two-run rally in the top of the inning that featured a two-run double by sophomore CF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS).
The Wolverines (6-8) held a 12-6 edge in hits but fell as Kansas CF Jason Appuhn tied the game with a double and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by DH Doug Dreher.
Sophomore RHP Tim Leveque (Northridge, Calif./Crespi HS) took the loss despite giving up an unearned run in the final frame. Sophomore LHP Rich Hill (Milton, Mass./Milton HS) had opened the inning on the mound and issued a walk that proved to be the tying run. Freshman RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) went the first seven innings in the no-decision, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned). Brauer is 0-0 with 3.78 ERA.
Senior 2B Scott Tousa (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) paced the Wolverines with three hits and Lollio led the comeback with a pair of doubles. Lollio had six hits in the two games against Kansas. Junior/sophomore DH Nate Wright (Tinley Park, Ill./Andrew HS) also had two hits in Sunday's series finale.
Michigan (6-8) returns to Fisher Stadium to host Saint Joseph's (Ind.) in the home opener on Wednesday (March 21, 3 p.m.). Senior RHP Bryce Ralston (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS) is listed as the probable starter in the home opener as he makes his first appearance since undergoing "Tommy John surgery" a year ago. The Wolverines head to Iowa to open Big Ten Conference action next weekend (March 23-25).
