Host Highlanders Top Wolverines to Win Own Tourney

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Host UC-Riverside used a pair of six-run innings to beat Michigan 17-8 in college baseball action Sunday evening (Feb. 24) at the Riverside Sports Complex. The victory pushed the host Highlanders to 10-5 on the season and the championship in their own RBI (Riverside Baseball Invitational) Tournament, while Michigan (0-3) placed fourth (0-3) in the three-day tournament with Oregon State (2-1) finishing second and San Francisco (1-2) third.
UCR CF Brian Wahlbrink paced the Highlander offense, going 4-for-6 with three doubles, and SS Scott Powis was 3-for-5 and scored three times.
Senior RHP Bobby Korecky (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) worked the first five innings and took the loss as UCR scored six times in the fifth to break open a 4-3 contest. UCR catcher Jimmy Anderson sparked the fifth-inning rally with a long three-run homer, his fifth of the season.
Senior LHP Kirk Taylor (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) worked the sixth inning and co-captain senior RHP Joe Young (Detroit, Mich./Bishop Gallagher HS) pitched the final two innings. Young fanned three and allowed just one earned run in his first appearance after missing the last two seasons due to injury.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the first and third innings, scoring once in the first to take a 1-0 lead and two in the third to pull with in a run at 4-3. Junior transfer Dan Augustine (Wausau, Wis./West HS) made his first career start and led the Wolverines with three hits. His bunt single helped build a run in the first, he singled and scored in the third and doubled to left to build another run in the seventh inning.
Junior 3B Brock Koman (Pueblo, Colo./South HS) continued his hot start. Koman was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. He continues to share the team batting lead at .500 (5-for-10), leads with five RBI and he has reached base nine times in 15 plate appearances.
Junior catcher Alex Coleman (Dallas, Texas/Lake Highlands HS) made his first start of the season and went 2-for-3 with a double, his fifth career multiple-hit game.
The Wolverines (0-3) continue early season action against Oregon State on Monday (Feb. 25, 1 p.m. PST) at the Riverside Sports Complex. Senior LHP Jeff Trzos (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) will make his first career start against the Beavers. Trzos (1-1, 1.64 ERA and four saves in 2001) has made 40 consecutive bullpen appearances for the Wolverines in his first three seasons.

Michigan pre-season All-America 3B Brock Koman extended his hitting streak to seven games in the loss to UCR. He is one of three players -- 1B/DH Mike Sokol (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle) and RF/DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) are the other -- to have hits in all three games this year.
Koman with five RBI on the season has moved his career total to 92.
Roberts made an excellent diving catch in left to save a run in the bottom of the first inning vs. UC-Riverside.
Michigan's hitting leaders after the three games include: 3B Brock Koman (.500, 5-for-10, three walks, 1 HBP); senior RHP/2B Bobby Korecky (.500, 3-6); junior 2B Dan Augustine (.500, 3-for-6); junior catcher Alex Coleman (.500, 2-for-4); sophomore RF/DH Brandon Roberts (.300, 3-for-10) and junior CF Gino Lollio (Cape Coral, Fla./Mariner HS) at .273 (3-for-11).
Freshman OF Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./The Marist School) went 0-for-4 in his first career start in RF at UC-Riverside.
The Wolverine leadoff position scored four runs vs. UCR with sophomore SS Brandon Jominy (Coral Springs, Fla./Westminster Academy) and freshman SS Nick Rudden (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) each scoring twice without getting a hit. Jominy walked in the first and was hit by a pitch in the third, while Rudden walked as a pinch hitter in the seventh and reached on an error in the ninth.
