LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky won the battle of the leadoff batters in a 15-14 decision over the University of Michigan in college baseball action Saturday afternoon (March 13) in Cliff Hagan Stadium. Kentucky outfielder Casey Gilvin hit two homers and knocked in five runs from the top spot in the Wildcat lineup, while Michigan sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) "only" had four RBI as the Wolverine leadoff man in a game that featured several comebacks.
The host Wildcats (12-4) had a 6-0 lead, watched the Wolverines (4-6) score seven runs in the fourth and then add one more in the fifth for an 8-8 tie. The host squad scored five times in the sixth for a 13-8 lead and needed two more runs in the eighth to hold off Michigan for the win.
Gilvin was 4-for-6 with a pair of homers and his five RBI to pace the Kentucky attack, while 1B Michael Bertram was 4-for-5 with three doubles and LF Mike Breyman chipped in with three hits and three runs scored.
The top of the Wolverine lineup accounted for eight RBI as Getz was 3-for-6 and drove in four runs and junior OF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) hit a long three-run homer and added a fourth RBI in the eighth inning.
Junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) collected his third game with three hits or more in the last two weeks, and he hit his first homer as a Wolverine. He tied the game at 8-8 with the homer in the fifth inning and tied the game at 13-13 with a two-out single in the eighth inning.
The host Wildcats scored four runs while sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning against Wolverine starter senior/junior RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS). Kentucky collected three doubles in the inning, with LF Breyman driving in the first run and Bertram adding a two-run double.
Kentucky added a pair of unearned runs in the third inning when DH Billy Grace popped a two-run double down the line in left, the fourth Kentucky two-base hit in the game.
Meanwhile, Kentucky starter Seth Stanley breezed through the first three innings without allowing a hit, but the Wolverines reached Stanley for seven runs on six hits in the fourth inning to take a 7-6 lead, with Butler capping the rally with a three-run homer over the scoreboard in right.
Bohm started the rally when he was hit by a pitch, sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) singled to center for the first Michigan hit of the afternoon and junior/sophomore catcher Jeff Kunkel (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest HS) singled to load the bases. Senior DH Brandon Roberts (Arlington, Texas/Martin HS) singled to drive in two runs, and later in the inning Getz had a two-run single to set the stage for Butler's three-run blast.
Michigan's 7-6 lead lasted just two batters before Kentucky RF Caleb Stewart slammed his fourth homer of the season to tie the game at 7-7. Moments later Bertram collected his second run-scoring double to give the Wildcats an 8-7 lead and knock Brauer out of the game. Bohm answered with a long homer to left to lead off the fifth inning to make the score 8-8.
Kentucky scored five times in the sixth off freshman RHP Andrew Hess (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central HS) with the usual suspects playing a role as Bertram had a run-scoring double, Grace a run-scoring single and Gilvin a three-run homer and it was 13-8.
The Wolverines started another comeback in the seventh as back-to-back doubles by junior LF Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School) and Bohm chased Kentucky starter Stanley and a run-scoring grounder by Scheidt made the score 13-10. Stanley pitched six innings and allowed Michigan 10 runs on 10 hits in a no-decision.
Junior/sophomore LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS) worked the only 1-2-3 inning for the Wolverines in the game in the seventh inning, allowing the Wolverine offense a chance to tie the game.
The Wolverines earned three more runs to tie in the eighth as sophomore shortstop Jeremy Goldschmeding (Martin, Mich./Allegan HS) singled and moved to third on a bunt single and first career hit for freshman CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS). Getz knocked in one with an infield grounder as he reached on an error. Butler's groundout made the score 13-12 and Bohm singled in the tying run.
Gilvin hit his second homer of the game in the bottom of the eighth as sophomore RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) took the loss. Feldkamp, who saved Friday's win over Dayton, is 1-1.
The Wolverines started one more rally after two outs in the ninth as Goldschmeding drew a walk and reached third on a passed ball and an error. Getz singled to center to make in 15-14, but Butler ended the game with a flyout.
The Wolverines meet Youngstown State in the third day of action in the Kentucky Invitational on Sunday (March 14) with junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian HS) with an 0-0 record and a 6.30 ERA on the mound. The start time has been move up an hour to 10 a.m.
