LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian HS) pitched a four-hit shutout as the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Youngstown State 7-0 in a game started Sunday morning (March 14) in Kentucky's Cliff Hagan Stadium. Penn (1-0) walked one and fanned two in recording his third career complete game and his second shutout. He did not allow a Youngstown State (2-7) runner past second base in the game.
| Only six Penguins reached base against Penn, and none advanced past second base. |
The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Junior LF Chris Burhans (Alpharetta, Ga./Marist School) reached second when his drive to deep center was dropped for an error, advanced to third after a foul pop to first base and scored on a two-out single by sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS). Scheidt collected his first steal of the season and scored on a single by redshirt freshman catcher Matt Rademacher (Bay City, Mich./Central HS).
Michigan missed a bases-loaded chance in the fourth inning as Getz and junior OF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) reached on singles and pulled off a double steal and Burhans was hit by a pitch, but the Penguins came up with a fine play up the middle on a base hit bid by Scheidt.
Michigan scored another unearned run in the sixth inning when Burhans and Bohm singled and Burhans scored when Scheidt's fly to left was dropped for an error. Getz had a run-scoring single in the seventh, the first earned run of the day for the Wolverines.
Michigan put the game away in the eighth with three runs as Scheidt and Rademacher singled, Goldschmeding lined a double to left for one run, freshman CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) knocked in the second run with a groundout and Getz doubled in the final run.
The Wolverines travel to Louisiana for three games next weekend, facing host Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday (March 19, 6:30 p.m. CST) and Harvard on Saturday (March 20, 6 p.m. CST) and Sunday (March 21, 9:30 a.m. CST).
