ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Using a final round three-over 75 from sophomore Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and a five-over 77 from junior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team held off a late charge from SMU to take home the team title at the 2005 Wolverine Invitational today (Sunday, Oct. 2) at the U-M Golf Course.

Schmucker made 14 pars and four birdies to match the school record with a 68 in the opening round Saturday.
The Maize and Blue started the final round with a 10-stroke lead over SMU after the Wolverines had team rounds of three-over 291 and 302 during Saturday's first two rounds. With greens getting faster throughout the final 18 holes, the Wolverine putters had some struggles as they posted a 312 in the final round giving them a 905 54-hole total. That total would stand up as SMU tallied a 305 in its final 18 holes to miss out on the team title by three strokes, as the Mustangs finished with a 908 total (292-311-305).
Individually, senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) helped the Wolverines to victory after her medalist runner-up finish. After opening with a career-best and U-M record-tying four-under 68 in the first round, she ran into putter troubles in her final 36 holes as she carded a three-over 75 in the second round and grinded her way to a 79 in the final round to post a 222 54-hole total. After holding the tournament lead after 36-holes, Schmucker would finish as the runner-up to Maryland's Katie Stepanek who fired a three-over 75 in the final round to take medalist honors with a 219 total (73-71-75).
Junior Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) tied for fourth giving the Wolverines two in the top five as she closed out with a 227 54-hole total. After opening with a one-under 71, she followed with a three-over 75 to put her in the third spot on the leaderboard. Putting struggles marred her final round as she had an 81 dropping her one spot.
Davis used her final round three-over 75 to jump up five spots as she was 11th with a season-best 233 total. She had rounds of five-over 77 and 81 in her first two rounds. Senior Kelly Easton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) tied for 13th after a career-best 235 tournament total. She opened with a career-best-tying three-over 75, and followed with rounds of 79 and 81 to give her the career-best total.
Other Wolverine starters finishes included: Broderick, 16th with a 236 total (83-76-77) and sophomore Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School [Boca Raton, Fla.]), 26th with a 244 total (84-76-84).
Playing as individuals were: freshman Lydia Benitez Colon (Dorado, Puerto Rico/Pendleton School [Bradenton, Fla.]), tied for 27th with a 245 total (80-81-84); senior Brandi Zielinski (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy), 29th with a 246 total (83-84-79); junior/sophomore Julie Inwood (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), 39th with a 255 (86-86-83) and redshirt sophomore Rose Cassard (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids HS), tied for 46th with a 275 (95-97-83).
The Wolverines will have a weekend off after three straight tournaments in a row. The Maize and Blue will head to Fayetteville, Ark., Sunday through Tuesday (Oct. 16-18) for the 2005 Lady Razorback Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Pinnacle Country Club.
