BEAUMONT, Texas -- Senior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) and junior 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) paced the offense and fifth-year senior RHP Jim Brauer (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) provided the pitching as the University of Michigan gained a doubleheader split, beating Lamar 11-1 in the second game in collegiate baseball action at Lamar's Vincent-Beck Stadium.
The Wolverines (7-3) bounced back after a tough 7-6 loss to Lamar (13-7) in the opener. Lamar is 2-0 in the Lamar Classic and Michigan is tied with New York Tech for second place at 1-1.
Preseason All-American Getz reached base nine consecutive times in the doubleheader as he was 7-for-9 and raised his batting average 87 points to a team-leading .487, while Bohm was 5-for-6 with three walks. Brauer was in command on the mound in the second game, allowing just five hits and a run in his seven innings of work that included a team season-high nine strikeouts. In three outings this season Brauer is 2-0 with a 3.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 18 innings.
The Wolverines took advantage of five Lamar errors in the second game, scoring four runs in the third inning, three times in the fifth and three in the eighth to put the game away. Michigan outscored the Cardinals 17-3 in the last 13 innings of action in the doubleheader, but Lamar had jumped to a 5-0 lead in the opener and scored once in the eighth to snap a 6-6 tie after Michigan's four-run rally after two outs in the top of the eighth.
Michigan's first-game starter, senior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian), was tagged for five runs (four earned) on nine hits in five innings in the opener and left the game trailing 5-0.
All six of the Michigan runs in the opener came after two outs, and the comeback started in the sixth inning with two outs when sophomore LF Brad Roblin (Wayland, Mass./Rivers School) drew a walk and Getz singled to the left side, his third hit of the opener. Bohm launched a double to right-center, both runners scored and it was 5-2.
Roblin started the eighth-inning rally with a two-out triple and Getz knocked out Lamar starter William Delage with a run-scoring single. Bohm greeted Lamar's Allen Harrington with a long double to left, and he scored on a single by freshman RF Doug Pickens (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice) to make it 6-5. Pickens scored on a throwing error and the score was tied and Penn was off the hook.
Lamar scored the winning run off senior/junior lefty Drew Taylor (Toronto, Ontario/Upper Canada College) in the bottom of the eighth using a walk, a balk and a two-out single by Jeremy Gray. Taylor worked 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and two runs.
Senior Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) made a great bases-loaded catch to end the eighth inning, robbing Lamar catcher Michael Ambort of extra bases and three RBI. Ambort had a double, a homer and two RBI in the game. Lamar 3B Adrian Cantu paced the Cardinals in the twinbill with four hits, including a double, triple and home run.
Sophomore/freshman LHP Clayton Richard (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon HS) had another impressive outing on the mound in the second game. Richard worked the eighth and the ninth following Brauer and retired six of the seven batters faced. He ended the game with a strikeout, the 10th of the game for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines continue play in the Lamar Classic Sunday (March 13, 10:30 a.m. CST) in Beaumont, Texas, facing Central Connecticut State in a single game. Junior RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS) is expected to start with his 1-0 record and 0.82 ERA.
