WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Trailing the top spot on the leaderboard by nine strokes after 36 holes, the 25th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team used a career-best two-under 70 by freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School), an even-par 72 by junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) and a career-best two-over 74 by freshman Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) in the final round today (Sunday, April 9) at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational, on the Kampen Course at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex, to tally a tournament-tying low team round of 292 to vault themselves into a first place tie, along with TCU, with an 898 54-hole total.
Opening the tournament with a 309 Saturday, the Wolverines quickly found themselves sitting in the eighth spot. The Maize and Blue then rallied with the second 18 on Saturday posting a 297 to move themselves up to fifth after the first day. With Northwestern leading by nine strokes and TCU just a shot off the Wildcats, the Wolverines knew they had to stage a big comeback to get into a shot at a winning position. The Wolverines did just that as they continued on their descending team play tallying a 292 on Sunday in the final round to set up the dramatics.
Since Michigan teed off in the second wave of teams Sunday morning, the Wolverines had to wait almost one and a half hours before learning their fate and that their comeback was complete. As Northwestern shot a 303, and TCU had a 300, the Wolverines found they had made up the nine strokes and tied with TCU (299-299-300) for the team title. Both teams were declared co-champions since the tournament setup did not employ a tie-breaking procedure.
For the second straight weekend, Gendreau finished as the top Wolverine with a career-best tying 54-hole tournament total of 226. She opened with a 77 before slipping in the second round firing a 79, but came back in grand fashion, bolstering the Wolverine comeback with a career-best two-under 70 in the final round.
Schmucker was right behind Gendreau as she tied for 13th with a 227 total. After opening with a 78, she posted a 77 in the second round. Following Gendreau's lead, she added to the Wolverines' comeback firing an even-par 72 in the final round. Sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) gave the Wolverines three in the top 15 as she tied for 15th with a 228 total. After opening with a disappointing 81 in the first round, she did not hold back, firing a career-best-tying one-under 71 in the second round to get back into the hunt. She closed out with a 76.
Other Wolverines finishes include: senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS), tied for 21st with a 230 total (79-74-77); sophomore Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary), tied for 26th with a 231 total (76-75-80) and Davis, tied for 53rd with a 240 total (78-88-74).
For the individual medalist play, Kansas' Amanda Costner led from start to finish as she tallied a one-over 217 total (73-71-73). TCU's Camille Blackerby (76-73-71) and Texas A&M's Nicole Melton (73-71-76) tied for the runner-up spot with 220s.
With the regular season schedule completed, the Wolverines will shift their focus toward the postseason as they host the 2005 Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday (April 22-24), at the U-M Golf Course. The 72-hole championship will be played in a 36-18-18 format over the three days.
