LUBBOCK, Texas -- The University of Michigan women's golf team missed advancing to the NCAA Championships after posting a 305 today (Saturday, May 7) in the final round of the 2005 NCAA Central Regional at the Rawls Course. The Maize and Blue tallied a 926 54-hole total and were 15th among the 21-team regional field. The Wolverines posted team rounds of 301, 320 and 305 during the three-day event.
Sophomore Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS) continued her stellar regional play and barely missed out on qualifying for an individual spot for the NCAA Championships, losing on the first hole of a playoff between her and LSU's Brook Shelton.
After hooking her drive into a bunker, Broderick had to lay-up, while Shelton hit her second shot short of the green, just barely missing the water guarding the front side of the green as her ball rolled to the hazard line. Broderick again had to lay-up with her third shot as she just missed the green as she too avoided the green-side water. Shelton hit her third shot onto the green and Broderick just rolled her fourth off the green. After her chip and putt, Broderick posted bogey and Shelton two-putted her way to par and the second spot to the NCAA finals.
Despite not getting to the NCAA Championships, Broderick led the Wolverines for the fifth time this season, tying for sixth with a 224 total for her eighth top-10 finish in the 11 tournaments this season. Her top-10 finish is the highest by any Wolverine in an NCAA postseason tournament. She opened with a two-over 74, following with a three-over 75 as she jumped from a tie for 27th to a tie for sixth after 36 holes. She maintained her position as she posted her second-straight three-over 75 and forced a playoff for the final individual spot in the NCAA finals lineup. She tallied 33 pars and seven birdies in 54 holes during the regional.
Senior Laura Olin (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) closed out her career at Michigan tying for 49th with a 232 54-hole regional total. After opening with a four-over 76 in the first round, Olin struggled in the second round posting an 82. She recovered in the final round firing a two-over 74, which included playing two-under par in her final 11 collegiate holes. For the regional, she collected 31 pars and five birdies throughout the 54 holes.
Sophomore Ali Stinson (Penticton, B.C./Penticton Secondary) closed out her first NCAA postseason tying for 63rd with a 235 total. She opened with a four-over 76 in the first round and battled windy conditions in the second round to post an 80. She closed out with a 79 in the final round. She had 28 pars and five birdies during the regional.
Freshman Isabelle Gendreau (St. Georges de Beauce, Quebec/Saint Andrew's School) gained valuable experience in her first regional as she tied for 68th with a 236 54-hole total. She posted a three-over 75 in the first round, but fell into trouble with the winds of the second round as she carded an 84. She had a solid finish as she closed out with a 77 in the final round. She tallied 26 pars and seven birdies during the regional's 54-holes.
Junior Amy Schmucker (Cold Springs, Minn./Rocori HS) tied for 80th with a 238 total. She opened with a four-over 76, had an 83 in the second before closing out with a 79 in the final round. She had 31 pars, one birdie and an eagle during the Central Regional.
Auburn used a final-round 293 to break a four-way tie for first and claim the 2005 NCAA Central Regional title with an 896 54-hole total. The Tigers had rounds of 294, 309 and 293 en route to the championship. Texas A&M (293-310-300) was the runner-up at 903 while Missouri (291-312-302) was third at 905. In addition to the team title, Auburn's Diana Ramage took home medalist honors with a seven-stroke victory. She finished the regional with a four-under 212 (68-77-67) ahead of runner-up Louise Stahle of Arizona State (72-77-70/219). Tulsa's Lee Anne Pace was third (73-77-71/221).
