PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Freshman Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS) recorded the game-winning goal with just 39 seconds remaining in regulation play to propel the University of Michigan field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Temple on Sunday (Sept. 4) at Geasey Field. The win was the first for the Wolverines this season.
Hoyer's goal -- her second of the game -- came off a U-M penalty corner opportunity that resulted in a scramble in front of the Owl cage. Senior/junior Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) played the ball in with the initial shot from the top of the striking circle, but Temple goalkeeper Erin Hanshue made the low save. Hoyer, camped out in front of the Owls' cage, coralled the rebound and swatted the ball past a sprawling Hanshue.
After a largely defensive effort through the first half, both teams poured on the offense late in the game, combining for four goals in the final 15 minutes of play. Temple knotted the score at the 56:23 mark as Lindsay Holman capitalized on a long sideline pass from Melissa Fritze. Each team continued to pressure as they traded another pair of goals within a four-minute window as Hoyer earned her first collegiate goal at 63:27 to re-establish the U-M lead and Temple responded with just under three minutes to play when Rachel Barber dove at the ball deep in the Michigan circle and slapped it past junior goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS).
Michigan held the game's first advantage early in the contest following the first collegiate goal by freshman Erin Dallas (Marlowe, N.H./Keene HS) at the 1:48 mark. The play initiated with junior forward Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), who split a pair of Owl defenders as she carried the ball down the field. Fox fed a pass into the Temple circle, where Dallas capitalized on the opportunity, beating Hanshue low on the right side.
Michigan outshot and out-cornered the Owls in the non-conference contest. Riley earned two saves in the U-M cage, while Temple's Hanshue made 13 stops for the Owls.
The Wolverines will kick off the home portion of their schedule next weekend, hosting two non-conference affairs at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor. U-M will face off against Miami (Ohio) at 2 p.m. Friday (Sept. 9) before returning to the field on Saturday (Sept. 10) against Old Dominion with a 10 a.m. start.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Nancy Cox
On today's win ... "I'm extremely happy for the team. They have shown fantastic growth and improvement this season. They really had to weather adversity today. It's not easy to be scored upon, but how they responded to that challenge demonstrated the type of team that we are quickly becoming. We made several tactical adjustments, and they did exactly what we asked of them. We're very young, but at the same time, things look very promising. As soon as our finishers really start finishing with consistency, things will be great for Michigan field hockey."
