DOTHAN, Ala. -- Freshman RHP/DH Adam Abraham (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./South HS) retired all 10 batters he faced to collect his first career win and sophomore RF Doug Pickens (West Bloomfield, Mich./Brother Rice) drove in the winning run with a double to give the University of Michigan baseball team a 7-5 win over host Troy in the Wiregrass Classic Sunday afternoon (Feb. 26).
Michigan scored twice in the seventh to snap a 5-5 tie with two outs as junior OF Brad Roblin (Wayland, Mass./River School) walked with two outs and scored from first on the Pickens double to left. Pickens had a homer and two doubles in the two games played Sunday.
Michigan grabbed the lead in the top of the first with an unearned run as junior CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield) reached on an error, went to second on a balk, stole third base, and scored on an infield grounder by sophomore 1B Derek VanBuskirk (St. Clair, Mich./St. Clair).
The Wolverines added to the lead in the fourth inning as senior co-captain A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) recorded the first U-M hit of the game -- a long homer to right -- scoring Pickens, who reached on a walk, making the score 3-0.
The Wolverines chased Troy starter Jon Gianquitti in the sixth. He worked the first 5.2 innings but left the game trailing 3-0 after allowing just one hit, the Scheidt homer. After two outs and none on, Michigan scored two more runs with a pair of walks and a single by Rose to load the bases, and SS Leif Mahler (Columbus, Ohio/St/ Charles Prep) singled in both runs.
Troy scored five runs off five Michigan pitchers in the sixth as SS Tom King homered to open the frame and Ben Woods had a two-run pinch single. Freshman Abraham got the final out with the go-ahead run on second base.
Wednesday's (March 1) starter at Central Florida is unknown at this time, with redshirt freshman Chris Fetter (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) and true freshmen LHP Mike Wilson (Pickering, Ontario/Pine Ridge) and Abraham as potential starters. They all saw action Sunday.
