FULLERTON, Calif. -- Junior forward Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) scored the game-winning goal to lead the University of Michigan men's soccer team over the Cal State-Northridge Matadors, 2-1, Friday (Sept. 7) in neutral-site action at Cal State-Fullerton's Titan Stadium. Stacy also tallied his second assist of the season, feeding a corner kick to sophomore defender Julian Robles (Los Angeles, Calif./Damen) prior to his goal.
Robles, back on the West Coast for a homecoming, earned his first career goal against the Matadors. The score came at the 50:45 mark off a corner kick by Stacy from the left side of the field. Robles went up strong to the ball, heading it between the goalie and the near post. The ball struck the pipe and fell in the goal to break the stalemate between the two squads.
The Wolverines' closest scoring chance in the first half came when Robles headed a corner kick just wide of the net.
About 15 minutes after Robles' score, sophomore forward Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) -- after taking a hard knock from a Cal State-Northridge defender -- lunged for a pass from junior defender Michael Holody (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) and delivered it to Stacy for the game-winning goal. Stacy, who was already in motion, dribbled freely to the 18-yard box and legged the ball to the left side of the net.
The Matadors never gave up and began their strongest charge of the match late in the second half. At 78:19, Northridge forward Sunhyung Kim scored the team's only tally of the game. While the offensive onslaught continued, the Matadors were held back by a smart play by junior/sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central). With a Matador charging at him one-on-one, Sperry made a leaping, one-handed stop to maintain the Wolverine lead.
Michigan (3-0) faces Cal State-Fullerton Sunday (Sept. 9) in Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif. Action begins at 7 p.m. PDT.
