STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Penn State, 10-1, in Sunday's (April 6) series finale, as the Nittany Lions posted nine two-out runs over two innings in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Michigan (17-8, 7-1 Big Ten) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning as all three runs came across with two outs. Brian Ernst started the ballgame off with a first-pitch single into leftfield and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Freshman starter Travis Smith(Austin, Texas/Austin HS) then got Rob Yodice to fly out to leftfield.
The next five hitters reached base, including an RBI single and four walks. Two of those walks pushed runs across the plate to make the score 3-0. Senior/junior RHP Ben Jenzen(Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) came in with the bases loaded and two outs and got Lou Picconi to fly out to sophomore RF Alan Oaks(White Lake, Mich./Divine Child HS) to end the inning.
Oaks got the Wolverine offense going in the third inning with a leadoff double to deep left-centerfield. Oaks crossed home plate on the next pitch when sophomore 1B Mike Dufek(Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) drove a single to the same spot for his fifth RBI of the season. Penn State's pitching forced the tally to be Michigan's only for the afternoon, scattering three hits through the final six innings.
Junior 3B Adam Abraham(Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./South HS) now has at least one base hit in 23 of 25 games this season, including a current seven-game hitting streak.
The Wolverines return to the diamond Wednesday (April 9) for a non-conference matchup with the Toledo Rockets of the Mid-American Conference. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. in the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
