ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 4 USCHO.com/No. 4USA Today) handed the Ferris State Bulldogs (No. 6 USCHO.com/No. 7 USA Today) their first loss of the season, earning a 5-2 victory on Thursday night (Oct. 27) at Yost Ice Arena. Prior to tonight, Ferris State had only allowed five goals in its first six games.
Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) led the charge for the Wolverines with two goals, including the first goal of the game. After Travis Lynch's (White Lake, Mich.) extra-attacker goal four minutes later, Michigan maintained at least a two-goal lead from then on, posting its first conference win of 2011-12. Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) and Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas) each dished out two assists, while David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) registered one goal and one helper.
After a scoreless first period, Di Giuseppe tallied a goal on a Wolverine power play at 4:20 of the second stanza to open up a 1-0 Michigan lead, snapping in a back-door pass.
Lynch extended the U-M lead to two goals with the team's second power-play tally of the night at 8:08 of the second, parking himself in front of the Ferris State net and tipping a Mac Bennett (Narrangansett, R.I.) shot for his third goal of the season.
Midway through the second frame after a video review by officials confirmed Wohlberg's shot clanked off the back of the net and not just off the post, the Maize and Blue were awarded the third marker and eventual game-winning goal. Sparks earned his first assist of the evening on Wohlberg's third marker of the season.
The Bulldogs closed the gap to 3-1 when Chad Billins converted a Ferris State power play with his first goal of the year at 16:51 to wrap up the scoring
Derek DeBlois (Narrangansett, R.I.) put the Wolverines back up three, netting his first goal of the season at the 7:10 mark of the third period to make it a 4-1 game, sniping home a rebound from inside the right faceoff circle. Sparks posted his second point of the night by adding a helper.
After Jordie Johnston brought Ferris State to within two on the power play, Di Giuseppe netted his second goal of the night, with Bulldog goaltender Taylor Nelson having just reached the bench in favor of an extra attacker, for the fifth and final Michigan tally.
Goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) turned away 28-of-30 shots on goal, while Nelson allowed four goals on 27 shots.
The Michigan power play finished the night with a 2-for-5 effort, while Ferris State converted on 2-of-3 man-advantage opportunities.
The Wolverines return to action to complete the series against Ferris State on Friday (Oct. 28) at Yost Ice Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
