ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite dominating in shots and corner kicks, the 24th-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team suffered its first home defeat of the season, 1-0, to No. 11 Penn State on Thursday (Oct. 16) at U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines held an 18-8 advantage in shots, including 9-4 on goal, and took 11 corner kicks compared to PSU's two.

Taylor Timko
Michigan controlled possession in the early going, registering eight of the first nine shots of the match, but it was Penn State that capitalized first. In the 27th minute, Nittany Lion Mallory Weber crossed the ball from the left side to the far post, where Megan Schafer shot back near post from about 14 yards out and beat Wolverine goalkeeper Megan Hinz (Eldersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel).
In the 32nd minute, sophomore Nicky Waldeck (Chicago, Ill./Western Reserve Academy [OH]) put a header on net off an Ani Sarkisian (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill/Florida State) corner kick, but Penn State keeper Britt Eckerstrom was there for the save.
Michigan owned the shot count, 14-3, and dominated, 5-0, in corner-kick opportunities at the half, but Penn State took a 1-0 lead to the locker room.
In the 54th minute, Penn State nearly increased its lead, but Hinz made a diving foot save on Weber's initial shot, and Michigan's defense cleared Schafer's rebound shot off the line.
The Wolverines had four shots, including two on net, in the second half, but could not manage to net the equalizer. Waldeck finished the game with a game-high six shots, while freshman Taylor Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich./Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) attempted five.
Eckerstrom recorded nine saves in goal for Penn State en route to the shutout win, while Hinz made three stops for the Maize and Blue. With the win, Penn State took a one-game lead on Michigan in the Big Ten standings, with four games remaining in the regular season.
The Wolverines will host their final home match of the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 19) when Ohio State comes to Ann Arbor for a 2 p.m. contest at U-M Soccer Stadium. Michigan's five-person senior class will be recognized in a special Senior Day ceremony prior to the match.
