The University of Michigan women's basketball team (3-1) heads to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to take on Washington State (Nov. 28) and San Diego State (Nov. 29) as part of the San Juan Shootout. Both games are set for 1 p.m. AST at the Mario Morales Coliseum.
For the eighth straight season, U-M is playing multiple games over the Thanksgiving holiday. The Wolverines spent last Thanksgiving in New York City, playing Texas Tech and LSU at Barclays Center.
For the second time in four years, the Wolverines are facing Washington State in warm weather. The two teams squared off on Nov. 25, 2011, at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Michigan came away with a 69-39 win in that contest. Nicole Elmblad was the only current Wolverine to see action in that game.
The Wolverines are currently leading the Big Ten in rebounding margin at +13.0 per game. U-M is averaging 42.0 rebounds to its opponents' 29.0 boards per game.
Michigan changed up its starting lineup against Western Michigan (Nov. 23) en route to a 74-47 win. Junior Madison Ristovski made her first start since last season against Notre Dame (Dec. 14), with freshman Katelynn Flaherty coming off the bench. Flaherty responded with a career-best 18 points on 8-for-13 shooting, and Michigan totaled a season-high 31 bench points in the 27-point win.
Senior Cyesha Goree has racked up four double-doubles to start the season and is currently leading the country in that category. She is averaging 12.0 points on 53.8 percent shooting and 12.8 rebounds per game.
Freshman Maria Backman put together the best game of her young career in Michigan's win over Western Michigan (Nov. 23). She scored the first points of her career on a three-pointer and finished with seven points. She also recorded five rebounds and two steals in 18 minutes.
Since head coach Kim Barnes Arico took over prior to the 2012-13 season, Michigan is 18-6 following a loss. During non-conference action in that span, U-M is 7-0 after dropping a contest.
U-M has a trio of players in Shannon Smith, Siera Thompson and Cyesha Goree that is approaching 500 career points. Smith is the closest to the mark with 489, followed by Thompson with 485 and Goree at 473. There have been 54 players in program history who have scored at least 500 points, including Nicole Elmblad (642).
