ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with its ninth straight win, cruising to a 3-0 shutout against rival Ohio State on Saturday (Oct. 31) in front of 557 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field. The shutout victory is U-M's third straight shutout win and seventh in nine games.
The Wolverines dominated the contest, outshooting the Buckeyes, 19-1, and outcornering them, 9-2, despite playing down a player due to several cards throughout the game, including a five-minute stretch down two late in the first half.
Michigan netted two goals on penalty corner opportunities, including freshman Emma Way's game-winner at the 11:29 mark. Sophomore Katie Trombetta fired the initial corner shot on goal, and the rebound kicked to the left side, where Way knocked it back into the lower left-side corner for her third goal this season and second in as many games.
After killing off two yellow cards late in the first half and getting senior Lauren Thomas back onto the field early in the second, the Wolverines ramped up the intensity in the OSU defensive 25. Thomas was one of two Wolverine seniors to score on Senior Day. She posted her ninth goal of the season, tying U-M's team lead, on a sweep shot from the top of the circle, finishing five hole on Buckeye goalkeeper Liz Tamburro at 57:50.
Graduate Mackenzie Ellis added another less than four minutes later, at 61:12, diving in front to muscle in a corner rebound -- after inserting on the play -- for her fourth of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson and senior/junior Chris Lueb made no saves but combined for the shutout, while Tamburro earned eight saves in the Ohio State cage.
