BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Emma Way took advantage of a flurry in double overtime to bury the game-winning tally at 92:39, propelling the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 1-0 win against Iowa in the Big Ten Conference Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday (Nov. 5) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. It marks the Wolverines' 10th straight win and fourth straight shutout.
Graduate student Mackenzie Ellis set up the game-winning flurry, feeding the ball into circle and finding Way on the left side. Way passed it to the front of the cage for senior Shannon Scavelli, who fired a shot to left side of the cage. Hawkeye goalkeeper Alexandra Pecora got a toe on it, kicking the ball left, but Way chased after it, turned and sent a reverse chip through the Hawkeye goalie's legs into the near side of the cage. It marks her fourth goal of the season and third in as many games.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson made two of her five saves in the first overtime frame, coming up with a huge point-blank stop in front on Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Stephanie Norlander and again moments later on a reverse chip attempt from the right side. The Wolverines also turned away an Iowa overtime penalty corner; as the Hawkeyes passed the ball around, senior Lauren Thomas got her stick on it to block the shot wide.
While both teams posted multiple scoring opportunities throughout regulation, the Wolverines largely dominated the second half, outshooting the Hawyekes, 9-3, and outcornering them, 4-1. Iowa's Percora earned six saves in the second half -- as part of an 11-save effort -- many coming in the final 15 minutes of regulation. U-M's best chance came on a point-black shot from junior Courtney Enge. Pecora saved the ball and kicked it out to the right, and though Scavelli was right there, she could not control the rebound.
Sophomore Katie Trombetta also had three shots saved late -- two on penalty-corner changes -- while Scavelli had a just missed after a steal at the 25.
Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes, 19-11, and outcornered them, 10-5. The Wolverines boast 10 shutouts on the season and eight over their last 10 games.
The Wolverines advance to the second Big Ten Tournament semifinal contest tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 6), scheduled for 4 p.m. at the IU Field Hockey Complex. U-M will face Penn State.
