BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Down a goal with less than a minute remaining in regulation, the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used a wild comeback to edge Penn State, 2-1, in overtime in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon (Nov. 6) at the IU Field Hockey Complex. It marks the Wolverines' third overtime this season and second in as many games. U-M extended its win streak to 11 in a row.
The Wolverines will face Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament championship game at noon on Sunday (Nov. 8) live on the Big Ten Network from the IU Field Hockey Complex. Michigan boasts five Big Ten Tournaments titles and has advanced to the final in 12 of the last 19 seasons.
After the Nittany Lions drew a late red card in regulation, Michigan played overtime with a 7-on-6 player advantage and quickly took advantage. Sophomore Katie Trombetta netted the game-winning goal at the 72:33 mark on a stellar effort within the PSU defensive 25, carrying the ball into the circle from the left side and feeding the ball back to freshman Emma Way in front. Way, who scored yesterday's (Thursday, Nov. 5) overtime game-winner, chipped it over the sprawled Penn State goalkeeper back to Trombetta, who knocked it into the open net. It is her eighth goal of the season and fifth game-winner.
With the Wolverines trailing late in regulation, Michigan pulled sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson for an extra attacker on a timeout with just 1:17 left in the second half. Senior Lauren Thomas fed a long pass through the midfield and into the circle, finding sophomore Carly Bennett, who spun out and fired a shot on goal. Freshman Leah Cardarelli rushed the left post on the play and got her stick on the ball, tipping it between her own legs and into the cage at 69:05 -- with just 55 seconds left in regulation.
After a scoreless first half, Penn State took the game's first lead on a penalty corner at 38:09 when Kirstern Gochnauer knocked in a loose ball after Swenson saved the initial shot.
Michigan outshot the Nittany Lions, 17-7, and outcornered them, 5-3. Swenson earned three saves, while Penn State's Jenny Rizzo stopped three of five U-M shots on goal.
