ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a tight finish, the University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to Drexel University, 9-7, Saturday (March 21) at Michigan Stadium. Junior Peter Kraus tallied two goals and two assists, while senior Mike Francia added three goals and an assist of his own in the defeat.
Drexel went on a 3-0 run to open up the contest, scoring the only goal of the quarter and the first two of the second quarter, to take an early lead. Junior Mike Hernandez opened up scoring for the Wolverines (4-4) with a top-shelf goal with 9:29 remaining in quarter two. Michigan then went on a run of its own with three straight goals. Kraus scored with 8:14 left, and Francia added a pair at the 8:03 mark as well as an extra-man goal with 5:15 left in the half.
After another goal by Drexel then brought its lead to 5-4 entering the half.
The four total goals in the opening half were the fewest in any contest for the Wolverines on the season, as junior/sophomore Gerald Logan made seven saves. Drexel outshot U-M, 24-10, on the half.
In a defensive third quarter, U-M outscored Drexel, 2-1. Francia netted his second goal of the game, to go along with his previous two assists, at the 7:24 mark of the quarter. Senior Will Meter tallied his first goal of the game with 3:13, tying the game at 6-6 going into quarter four.
In the fourth, Drexel scored first with 8:09 left in the contest, taking a 7-6 lead. Francia added his third goal of the game with 7:05 remaining to tie it up yet again, but Drexel scored the final two goals of the contest, one at the 4:21 mark and one more on an empty net with only one second remaining to seal with victory.
Michigan returns to action Sunday (March 29), taking on the Maryland Terrapins in a Big Ten battle at 5 p.m. from Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium in College Park.
