
Taylor Strong in Cage, Michigan Battles in Loss at No. 1 Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team battled in a 9-4 loss to No. 1 Notre Dame on Saturday (March 14) at Arlotta Stadium.
U-M (3-5) held the high-powered Fighting Irish (6-0) offense seven goals below its season average of 16, while Hunter Taylor made 17 saves, one shy of matching his career high.
Despite falling behind early, the Wolverines fought back and came within one on two occasions, including an Adam Udell goal coming out of halftime. However, Notre Dame closed the contest on a four-goal run to secure the victory.
Offensively, Nick Roode recorded two points with a goal and an assist, while CJ Reilly, Luke Shannehan and Udell each scored once for Michigan. Alex Lobel added an assist.
Notre Dame scored twice in the opening four minutes before Michigan regrouped and forced a turnover on the ensuing faceoff. Lobel fed Roode to bring U-M within one with 10:22 remaining in the quarter. The Irish added a late goal to take a 3-1 lead into the second quarter.
Notre Dame opened the second with back-to-back goals, but Michigan responded with two of its own. Roode connected with Shannehan in the final four minutes to pull the Wolverines within two, 5-3, at halftime.
Taylor made 10 first-half saves, while Carson Billig and Michael Kelly each recorded a caused turnover.
Udell again brought Michigan within one early in the third, but Notre Dame answered with two goals to carry a 7-4 lead into the final 15 minutes.
The Irish added the only two goals of the fourth quarter to close out the 9-4 win.
U-M opens Big Ten Conference play Saturday (March 21) when it travels to Johns Hopkins for a noon contest against the Blue Jays. The game will be streamed on B1G+.
