ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored six times in the first inning on its way to a 10-4 win over Oakland Tuesday afternoon (April 21) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Wolverines scored the six runs on three hits and the benefit of two Oakland errors. Junior Jacob Cronenworth was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Senior Jackson Glines reached on an error, and junior Travis Maezes singled in Cronenworth for the game's first run. Sophomore Carmen Benedetti walked to load the bases. Junior Cody Bruder hit a bouncer to third that was collected by the Golden Grizzly third baseman, but his throw home was wild. Freshman Jake Bivens reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Maezes for a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Johnny Slater tripled to the gap in right to score two, and Cronenworth came back around and singled up the middle, driving in Slater.
Michigan scored a pair of runs in the second as Cronenworth's single to right scored Slater and Bivens. Oakland put up a single runs in the fourth and fifth and a two-spot in the seventh, but Michigan capped the scoring with a pair of runs in the eighth. With sophomore Harrison Wenson on first, Cronenworth doubled to right. Wenson scored on an Oakland throwing error. Maezes brought in the game's final run with a groundout to second to score Cronenworth.
Cronenworth was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Maezes and Slater had two hits apiece. Senior/junior Matt Ogden earned the win on the mound. He allowed five hits and an unearned run with two strikeouts and three walks in four innings of work.
Michigan plays its final Big Ten road series of the season this weekend at Minnesota. The series begins on Friday night (April 24) at 6:35 p.m. CDT.
