The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team inked 12 student-athletes as members of the team's 2015 recruiting class last spring. The recruiting class is the fourth full class in the team's varsity history. MGoBlue.com will sit down with each incoming freshman on an individual basis this fall.
Next up is attackman/midfielder Decker Curran, a dynamic offensive threat from Greenwich, Connecticut. Listed as the No. 48 recruit in the country by Inside Lacrosse, Curran was also named to the 2015 Under Armour All-America contest, where he scored a pair of goals.
On why he chose Michigan ... "Right off the bat I was looking for a big school. Michigan really had everything to offer. Education just really blew all the other schools out of the water that were trying to recruit me. The coaching staff is an awesome group of guys. I ultimately came here just to play lacrosse, building a new program on the rise. I fell in love with the campus right away, and it's a place that I could see myself here without playing lacrosse. School spirit is a big one obviously, but mostly education and just being around a good group of guys."
On coming from an area with a lot of guys on the team ... "I definitely talked to Andrew Hatton, Tommy Heidt, Charlie Keady. I've played against all of them and they are all unreal players. Just seeing a good group of guys go there from Fairfield County, I would definitely love to add to it. Like I said, I played against them. I haven't seen many guys as good as they are, so I wouldn't mind to join them."
On his father's hockey career ... "My step dad, Dave Maloney, played from 1974-85 for the New York Rangers. In his last year he played for the Buffalo Sabers. He was the youngest captain in New York's history to ever where the 'C.' If I'm not mistaken, he still has the penalty record in the NHL for a rookie. He was a fighter. He now works for Madison Square Garden Network as a broadcaster."
On how playing hockey transfers over to lacrosse ... "It is a fast game, a very fast game. I want to say the stick handles, soft hands are the two main things. I like scoring. Putting the puck in the back of the net is awesome, just like it is in lacrosse. Overall, I like the contact and the speed of the game, and you have to be coordinated."
On his experiences with Bridge and the Under Armour Game ... "Being around the top 44 players in the nation is something new. I've grown up listening about these names in high school, watching these guys play, and I was just fortunate enough to be out there playing with them. I couldn't be more grateful. It was an awesome opportunity. The one thing that definitely was a dramatic change for me was the level of play, the speed, sticks in the passing lanes.
On what he would consider a successful year ... "A successful year for me would just be touching the field, to be honest. Getting out there, becoming a better player obviously, learning new things, learning from the guys, getting some playing time here and there. That would be successful for me, especially coming in as a freshman; we have an unreal class ahead of us. Academically, I am looking to have a strong baseline my freshman year, not saying that I'm not going to have a strong baseline my sophomore, junior, and senior year, but I definitely want to start out strong, be able to carry for myself, and find out what I want to do in the future."
