COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team could not maintain its early advantage at No. 9 Maryland, dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker on Friday afternoon (Sept. 25) at the Terrapins' Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.
A controversial Maryland goal early in the second half proved the difference as Welma Luus one-touched a pass from Emma Rissinger near the right post at the 37:45 mark. The controversy occurred when Rissinger took the Terp free hit 20 yards ahead of the foul location, streaking in behind the Wolverine defense before the field was set. But because the play in question did not occur within the 25, the goal could not be reviewed.
Michigan struck first in the contest, scoring at 19:32 on a redirection from junior Sina Lampe -- her second marker of the season. Sophomore Veerle Lubbers smacked the ball into the circle just across the 25 from the right sideline, and Lampe just got her stick on it, tipping it past UMD goalkeeper Sarah Holliday.
The Wolverines largely controlled the early portion of the first half leading up to the goal, just missing on several chances, including a penalty stroke by senior Lauren Thomas that went wide.
The Terrapins evened the score late in the half, at 26:44, when Luus tipped in the direct shot on a penalty corner from the right post.
Maryland narrowly outshot the Wolverines, 13-12, and outcornered them, 9-4. Sophomore goalkeeper Sam Swenson earned four saves, while graduate student Mackenzie Ellis added a defensive save in the first half. The Terrapins' Holliday made six saves.
The Wolverines will wrap the road trip on Sunday (Sept. 27), traveling to Piscataway, New Jersey, to face Rutgers at noon at Track/Field Hockey Complex. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
