ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team used a 29-point third quarter to power past Ohio, 69-46, on Tuesday evening (Dec. 13) inside Crisler Center.
Junior Katelynn Flaherty led the Wolverines with 25 points, scoring 13 third-quarter points as Michigan made its run. Senior Siera Thompson notched her second career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while sophomore Hallie Thome chipped in 13 points and four rebounds. Michigan grabbed 63 rebounds in the contest, the third-best total in school history. Michigan shot just 35.5 percent (22-for-62) from the floor but used a 20-for-23 showing from the free throw to offset that.
Holding a 27-21 lead entering the third quarter, Michigan opened with a 15-6, capped by back-to-back Flaherty triples for a 42-27 lead with 4:36 left in the period. The Wolverines nudged the lead to 20 on a Thompson layup and kept a 56-35 lead heading into the fourth period. In the third, U-M was 10-for-19 from the floor and held Ohio to 3-for-14 shooting to take control of the contest.
Michigan's lead stayed above 20 points in the final period. U-M led by as many as 29 in the final quarter, taking a 66-37 lead on a freshman Kysre Gondrezick layup with 6:10 left.
The teams went back and forth in the early going of the game as neither could find an offensive rhythm. Michigan led 14-8 in the opening moments of the second quarter off a Flaherty jumper, but Ohio answered with a 7-0 run for a 15-14 lead at the 6:21 mark. Michigan regained the lead on a layup from freshman Kayla Robbins with 5:32 on the clock, giving the Wolverines the lead for good.
