Wolverines Trounce Eagles in Midweek Home Action

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team used four scoring innings -- including a four-run fourth and a five-run eighth inning -- to defeat Eastern Michigan University by a 12-4 score on Tuesday (May 4) at the Wilpon Complex, Ray Fisher Stadium. The victory extends Michigan's home record to 13-3 on the season.
Despite a scoreless first inning, the Wolverines got their bats going early in the second inning, as sophomore Drew Lugbauer and senior Dominic Jamett picked up back-to-back one-out singles to give Michigan two base runners. Lugbauer later scored on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 Michigan lead, and the tone of the contest was set from there.
In the bottom of the third, sophomore Jake Bivens led off with a single up the middle and got into scoring position as he picked up his ninth stolen base of the season. A fielder's choice then allowed senior Matt Ramsay to take first base, though no out was recorded. With two runners on, junior Harrison Wenson came up with the RBI double to the left-centerfield gap, scoring Bivens and pushing Ramsay to third base. The following RBI groundout from senior Cody Bruder then scored Ramsay, giving the Wolverines a 3-0 edge.
A four-run fourth inning pushed the Wolverines ahead even further, as three clutch hits and an Eastern Michigan error put Michigan up by seven. Jamett led off the rally with a long single off the left-field wall, and junior Hector Gutierrez reached on an error to give Michigan two men on base. Junior Michael Brdar then loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, and a two-RBI single from Bivens gave the Wolverines runners on first and second with two runs scored. An RBI double from Ramsay followed, scoring Brdar and pushing Bivens to third, and after a walk to junior Carmen Benedetti loaded the bases, Bruder patiently earned a walk to push Bivens across the plate and end the scoring.
Eastern Michigan rallied for two runs in both the fifth and eighth innings, but a five-run rally from Michigan in the bottom of the eighth inning sealed a 12-4 victory for the Wolverines. Wenson, Bruder and Benedetti all picked up hits in the inning, while freshman Jonathan Engelmann and Jimmy Kerr came up clutch with pinch-hit outfield singles.
Backed by 12 runs on 17 hits, the Michigan pitching staff had four quality outings from pitchers Keith Lehmann, Jayce Vancena, Mac Lozer and Troy Miller. The group tallied 10 strikeouts and allowed just four earned runs and four walks on the night.
