ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After four scoreless innings of play, the No. 21-ranked University of Michigan baseball team rallied for four consecutive scoring innings to defeat Rutgers by a 13-1 score on Saturday night (May 7) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The victory clinches the series for the Wolverines, marking their seventh series win of the 2016 season.
Much like the first game of the series on Friday night (May 6), the first four innings of Saturday's contest were scoreless for both squads. In the top of the fifth, Rutgers rallied for a run on a single, a walk and an RBI fielder's choice.
The Wolverines responded again in the bottom of the same inning, however, forcing a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Jake Bivens led off the at-bat with a walk, but a fielder's choice from senior Matt Ramsay recorded the first out, putting Ramsay on first. One out later, junior Harrison Wenson walked, and he and Ramsay advanced one base each on a Rutgers passed ball. A walk to senior Cody Bruder then loaded the bases, setting the stage for sophomore Drew Lugbauer to blast a base-clearing double off the left-field wall for a two-run lead.
The bottom of the sixth inning featured six more runs for Michigan, as the Wolverines capitalized on four hits, a Rutgers error and free bases on two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a balk. The two-out rally began with a walk to Bivens, and a single from Ramsay gave Michigan two baserunners. A double steal then resulted in a Rutgers throwing error, as Bivens took home, and Ramsay advanced to third. The 4-1 lead was soon cut as Ramsay attempted to steal home and the Rutgers pitcher balked, allowing him to score freely. With the bases cleared, junior Carmen Benedetti began the rally again with a two-out single to the left-centerfield gap, and Wenson took first on a hit-by-pitch to again give Michigan two baserunners. Bruder then doubled down the left-field line, advancing to third on the throw home and allowing both runners to score and force a 7-1 lead. Lugbauer followed with another big hit, sending a two-run blast to straight-away centerfield for his fifth homer of the season.
The 9-1 lead carried the Wolverines to the bottom of the seventh inning, but they scored three more runs on singles from Bivens and Ramsay, coupled with RBI swings from Benedetti and Lugbauer.
A sac fly from Ramsay added another run in the bottom of the eighth, forcing a 13-1 run deficit and marking 51 runs scored for Michigan on the week.
Overall, the Wolverines tallied 13 runs on 13 hits in the outing. Through two of the three games this series, Michigan has outscored Rutgers 27 runs to two.
Sophomore lefty starter Oliver Jaskie was lights out in the effort, matching his career-high seven innings pitched and striking out four and surrendering just five hits. He threw just 89 pitches in 25 batters faced, earning his seventh win of the season.
Coming out for the eighth inning was freshman Jack Bredeson, who allowed just one single but recorded three groundouts to hold the Scarlet Knights scoreless. That same momentum continued in the top of the ninth, as freshman Ricky Karcher closed out the game in 1-2-3 fashion.
Hugs and high-fives all around, as Karcher gets Blum looking to end this one. Michigan wins 13-1! #GoBlue https://t.co/3t1oJVTGJw
