Wolverines Pull Out Overtime Win at Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Freshman Deja Church made three free throws with 0.7 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime, where the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team outscored Nebraska, 7-2, in the extra frame to earn a 69-64 overtime win on Saturday night (Jan. 13) at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Down three points, Michigan got the ball back with 21 seconds left in regulation. Michigan called timeout to draw up a play but could not get a look, calling another timeout with eight seconds remaining. Church got the ball on the baseline and fired a step-back three-pointer and was fouled to head to the line for three free throws. Church nailed all three to tie the game at 62 and Michigan stole Nebraska's inbound attempt on the ensuing possession to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Nebraska scored first for a two-point lead just 49 seconds into overtime. Michigan did not get on the board until junior Hallie Thome made good on a jumper with 2:42 remaining to once again tie the game. Thome made a pair at the line with just 1:03 left in the contest to nudge the visitors on top, 66-64. Michigan strung together a couple of stops before Thome was fouled with 12 seconds remaining to once again head to the free throw line, cashing in on one for a three-point lead.
Senior Katelynn Flaherty tied up Nebraska on its next possession and with the arrow favoring the Maize and Blue, Church was fouled on the inbound to head back to the free-throw line. Church calmly made both free throws to provide the final margin, 69-64.
Flaherty led the Wolverines with 26 points on 9-for-17 shooting and in the process passed Glen Rice's school record of 2,442 points. She finished the game at 2,457 career points. Thome turned in 13 points with nine rebounds and freshman Hailey Brown recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Church came through with 10 points off the bench, going 5-for-5 at the free-throw line. Michigan weathered 26 turnovers by outrebounding the Huskers, 43-22.
Michigan's lead swelled to 10 points, 25-15, on a Church steal-and-score to force a Nebraska timeout with 1:30 left in the first quarter. Michigan led 30-23 after the first quarter of action behind 10 points from Flaherty in the frame, including a pair of three-pointers.
Nebraska scored the first six points of the second quarter to close within a point, but Flaherty answered with a deep three-pointer to break the all-time scoring record at Michigan.
U-M hit halftime with a 48-44 lead on the strength of 19 points from Flaherty and 61.3-percent shooting (18-31).
After a frenetic first half, the teams combined for just nine points in the third quarter as Michigan took a 53-48 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Flaherty hit a step-back triple from straight away for a 56-48 lead with 8:15 to go. Nebraska answered with five straight points to cut Michigan's lead to three, 56-53, to force a Michigan timeout with 6:26 remaining. Nebraska's run continued after the timeout, taking its first lead with 4:35 remaining (58-56).
Michigan was down 59-56 with 1:44 left before Brown came through with a three-pointer at the top of the key with 1:27 left. Michigan was whistled for a foul on the next possession as NU hit one at the line for a one-point lead with 1:09 to go. After Michigan came up empty, Nebraska hit two more free throws for a 64-61 lead with 21 seconds left to set up the final sequence.
U-M will complete a two-game road swing on Tuesday (Jan. 16), traveling to Ohio State to take on the Buckeyes for the second time in the last 10 games. Tip is set for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
